I'm in the market for a new turntable. I'd like to keep the cost at under $1,000. My current one is old and ready to be put out to pasture.

What do you have or what have you heard that sounds good?

Last time I asked, the consensus was to buy a reconditioned older model.  As usual, the other key is a good cartridge, too.

Above a certain point, most turntables are vanity items.  But,... it is the human interface, so enjoy.

Last time I was thinking about getting a turntable, my quick research seemed to point to Marantz.  My father has a 70's vintage Marantz and it still works and sounds great.

Not a great answer, but an answer...

A friend just suggested a Rega RP3. I may try to find a place to check them out. I'd love to listen to one before I shell out the cash.

Music Hall makes decent modern turntables: MMF-5.1

$875, but you may need to pickup a cartridge as well. (Nope, just checked, comes with a MM cartridge for that price...)

Well, I finally did it. I decided on a Technics SL-1210MK5. I think we got a pretty decent deal. Very clean and not heavily used. Sounds really good.

My '63 vintage Thorens is still going strong.

But as they say in the equities markets, "Past performance does not guarantee future results".

Ditto, mine is a Thorens 166 model.  <-- It's so old, I can't remember.

Wikipedia has a pretty extensive web page about that Technics turntable.  It is a good one that's direct drive.  It was marketed to DJ's, so you know it's robust.
