A new trailer was posted the other day.  It is specific to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Lots of cool stuff to see in it.  It's available in HD, too.

I'm not expecting to see Smaug in this movie except, perhaps, in a prologue or some other introductory scene (exposition).

You do know the story has been split into three films, don't you?  The big events with Smaug probably won't happen until the end of film #2 or film #3.

If this movie is only as good as, or not as good as, Reign of Fire, I will be very disappointed.

P.S. - I don't think this story is really about the dragon.

it was never about the dragon.. the subtitle of the novel is "There and Back Again, A Hobbit's Tale". its about Bilbo.

I saw the trailer in 3D last weekend, it had the best 3D I've seen since Avatar and Tron: Legacy. Peter Jackson really pulled the effect off well!

In case you hadn't noticed, tickets for The Hobbit have already been put on sale.

Is this Bert, Tom or Bill?  Your guess is as good as mine (for now).  This last image is what my screen name refers to, not internet trolls.

So they're finally going to portray the Wargs as giant evil wolves instead of big hyenas?  That's definately an improvement.

Dragon will be cool.

I think it'll be hard to beat Vermithrax Pejorative in Dragonslayer though.

Benedict Cumberbatch (who voices Smaug the Magnificent, Smaug the Golden) has said in an interview he thinks we do get to see something of Smaug in the first film.

I heard the rumor...something about seeing the dragon's eye for a fleeting moment or something like that.

Just bought the whole family tickets to the IMAX December 14th. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!! I've been waiting for this since I first read the hobbit in 7th grade. Yes I've seen the cartoon version...don't really care for it.

I can hardly wait

Yeah, he did with LOTR, too.  I admit to being more of a purist and just hope that the liberties Jackson takes don't hurt  the storyline too much.

You can pretty much count on a dramatic cliffhanger reveal at the very end. I'm thinking basically of the end of Eragon (apparently I was the only one that wanted to see sequels to that)

The trailer before Skyfall focused too much on comic relief/humor. Hopefully that's not the tone for the entire movie.

The Hobbit was written for children.  There is quite a bit of comedy in the story, especially early on.  It's an introduction to the characters intending to help you like and care about them.  I am expecting a lot of physical humour, farts and gross jokes at The Unexpected Party.

Just laugh along with our friends, there will be plenty of time for bloodshed later on.

Good question.  They may be shooting for a PG rating (since it is based on a bed-time storybook) and are trying to decide what they have to edit to get it, or they may be undecided as to which rating they want to go for.

Yeah pretty strange. I've seen other movies get this close to release without ratings, but I don't recall it for a movie this huge. Its usually the movies that are borderline straight to DVD

I just saw a tv trailer I hadn't seen before that showed a brief glimpse of Smaug on it.  I'm guessing that there will be some flashback either at the beginning similar to what they did to show the history of the ring at the beginning of Fellowship or when the dwarves tell the story of Smaug attacking Lonely Mountain at Bilbo's.

“The trouble with redesigning dragons I’ve found is… you very quickly can go into science fiction territory, and I don’t want to do that,” the filmmaker said. “I want to present the most venal, scary, decrepit, nasty dragon I possibly can.”

"He is incredibly cunning and very old,...he's intelligent and sly,...so there's a lot of reptilian cunning in that character."

Council of Elrond, Hobbit Reviews Thread

It sounds as if everything we've said we wanted will be in the movie.

"The dead-on casting with exemplary performances from the leads as well as those in small roles make the fantasy feel real more than any technician can -– and the technicians on this film are world-class here. And yes, fantasy films can have exemplary performances and actors selling the fantastic as the everyday, have achieved high-craft in their art. Technically masterful, this adaptation of a classic children’s tale is grand and glorious cinema that is indeed lighter than its Rings cousin but also with nasty battle elements."

Amen!

The Ride of the Rohirrim is probably my favorite battle sequence of all time.  Way up there with the invasion of Normandy in Saving Private Ryan and only a very few others.

From the reading and video logs, I am under the impression Beorn is very much a bear.  That is, he looks just exactly like a bear - no special effects, just a bear.  To some extent, I hope this is incorrect.

I would have been fine with two movies.  To do the book justice I can understand and appreciate that it would take two.  With three I fear that it's more about sacrificing quality for increased revenue from the fans.  I'm hopeful that it will still be pretty good, though.

I, for one, am happy for as much of this as I can get.  It is my understanding the extra material and extra length is due to inclusion of the material in the Appendices of Lord of the Rings.

They've added the back story.  <-- That's a good thing!

There is always a deal to be cut with the devil, err, ... I mean, with the studio execs, but the extra material was wanted by Jackson and the fans, alike.

I have my tickets but there are four more days to wait.

I guess I'll have to wait and see.  My concern is that by adding the backstory they may end up detracting from the main story.  Also, I'm a bit skeptical that PJ will appropriately portray the backstory.  My fear is that he'll take a lot of "artistic liberties" and excuse them by claiming, "backstory."

I can deal with the fact that there's three movies. What I DESPISE is waiting a whole fucking year between each like with the LOTR. Particularly since they're all made at the same time. Now that bullshit I can't stand. I'm very tempted to wait til the bluray set for all of them but I'm sure it'll be 5-6 years before they release the proper extended set like they did with LOTR.

From what I last heard they movies were going to be releaed Chirstmas 2012, Christmas 2013, and Summer 2014, so not a full three years, but yeah, waiting sucks

Agreed.  If the "backstory" is not from the book but is totally invented (like the mounted warg attack on the way to Helm's Deep) and this reduces how much of the "real" story they portray, then we could do without it.  If it is material like the dwarves taking back and then losing Moria wherein Thorin earns his nickname Oakenshield (which it appears will be in the movie) or the White Council moving against Dol Guldur (which appears to be in the movie); if it is the stroy of the dwarves losing Erebor to Smaug,... well I'm okay with that.

Yeah I think 6 months between each would be absolutely plenty for them to get the full cash flow from each movie's theatrical run. Plus before each sequel they could have showings of the previous movie(s). No good reason at all to have longer than that between each.

I think there's a balancing act between theatrical runs and DVD/BRD sales.  I have heard that over half the revenue/profit now comes from DVD/BRD sales.  You want to maximize sales from each one for each movie.  Spaced too close together, you probably lose sales - next flick releases in theaters before DVD/BRD market is saturated.

I don't think I wanna see it in Higher Frame Rate 3d. I'm not a big fan of the soap opera look.
