Hello all,

I'm looking for a complete surround sound system for my basement and I don't want to spend more then $300-$400. I'd like to stick to with 5.1 cause the room is only around 275 sq. feet. Its will be used for Bluerays and video game, if that matters.

I found this on Amazon, would it be OK?

As always, thank you for any help

USB.. tick .. Ipod/Iphone... tick...

Have you considered LAN (RJ45) connection, to hook up to your router?  Is 3D not within your scope?

I'm kind of new to all this so, why would I want to hook up my router? No 3D right now, I just bought a Samsung 55" D6000.

Makes firmware upgrades easier, allows access to the Net (generally restricted by manufacturer and content varies)... YouTube is cool, often browse for HD trailers...

I didn't know you could do that with a receiver. I don't think I really need that because the TV I just bought have internet access.

It's a handy feature, even for the updates... My Panasonic has updated the firmware 4 times in the last 3 months (no noticeable difference)...

also means I can access the videos / music and pictures stored on my PC hard drive upstairs

You're on the right track! That Onkyo system isn't bad, the big issue with it is the lack of a powered subwoofer. Go with a 7.1 Onkyo but don't hook up the 2 additional speakers if you don't want to. The Onkyo HTS5400 is only a little bit more at $340 shipped, has a powered sub, and right in your price range. I don't think there is a better value out there.

Great choice of TV with the D6000! It is a smart TV, like you mentioned, but it requires either a USB LAN adapter ($40) or ethernet. Wired is always better than wireless, so if you can get your router nearby do so. Your TV will do updates quite often, mainly for the Smart Hub. Neither of the Onkyo receivers mentioned have network capabilities and I doubt you'll find any decent system in your price range that will since those receivers alone retail at $450+.

I just picked up a dvd-surround, wally world boxed,  Sony entertainment system open box special for $168. I had bought a separate bluray player that I had hooked to my old dvd system but my old system did not play DTS and it annoyed the crap out of me.

Anyway, it was a cheaper alternative that the rest of my options.

I also have it hooked up in the rear with a Rocketfish wireless adapter which works great.

Glad to hear that you're happy with it but those systems rarely last more than a few years, whether it's because of technology advancement, new desires/lack of connectivity, or poor build quality. Those rear wireless kits typically suffer from a lot of interference due to the abundance of wireless devices we have in our homes, our neighbors use, etc. Sorry to be the doom-n-gloom guy.
