| Got an older 1080i 52" tv with component inputs. I'd like to get more resolution out of this and go to an upscaling DVD or Blueray but I don't have an HDMI connector on the TV. Any suggestions? I've seen some converters but they are pricey (more than the player sometimes). Is there a cost effective way of using an HDMI output device with this or is there an upscaling DVD out there with component outputs that puts out the HD? |

Bluray is 1080p, not 1080i. DVD's are even lower resolution. Upscaling DVD's doesn't improve resolution. Save the money and get a new display. It sounds a little harsh but true. You can get a Vizio at costco and it is a good product for the price. Has allot of Apps for internet viewing. After years of watching a projection tv we finally broke down and got a 60" LED/LCD Sharp and wow. We also got a smaller vizio for the upstairs and its been great. Just FYI , Sony and Vizio seem to have the most free apps. We run a Sony Blue ray player on the new Sharp as we are not happy with the apps the Sharp has, just the picture. |

The only way to get high definition video is to play media which is high resolution. That means bluray, cable/sat tv or over the air broadcasts. Something which can sort of improve whatever standard definition video you're playing is an upscaling surround sound receiver. It won't make it HD, but it'll upscale lower resolution video better than whatever your TV might be capable of doing... a side benefit of going this route is if you've never had surround sound you'll now be in for a treat since you'll be able to hear stuff you've never heard before once you hook speakers up to the receiver. |

well. Not worth it. I've got a 1080i tv so was just wanting to use that since supposedly most DVDs can come up to that. However, we don't have a cable connection and don't watch network TV and haven't since 1992. Since all we do is watch maybe a total of 4 hours per week, it would not be worth it to buy a new set. We do have a great wired in wall surround system that takes full advantage of the dolby 5.2 on DVDs. so that is not an issue. Just seems a shame to have a 1080i tv set that can only take standard 720p dvd player.
My wife and I are minimalists and if we don't use something a lot we don't have it. I can't bring myself to pay the money for a new tv when I have a 52" one that is usable here. We definitely must be sticks in the mud. Our family income is good but I drive a 1996 dodge 2500 with a diesel that runs on homemade biodiesel that costs $.67 per gallon to make. She drives a MB 190D that uses the same fuel. I have no boats other than my kayaks and my only toys I guess are the guns in my safe. So if i buy one of those $50 boxes it won't upscale my DVDs to 1080i is what I am hearing? |
