It’s always a good to be spared form a waste of an hour and a half…. and so in that vein just a heads up that the new animated future length Batman Year One animated movie is a scattered mess.
It seems like it was written by a 20 year old Wall Street protestor in his spare time who knew little about Batman much less human physics.
Total junk.

PG-13....?  What pushed it that high?

I thought it was pretty faithful to the Frank Miller storyline. I liked it.

BA- a lot of the DCU and Marvel Animation "cartoons" are aimed at an older audience nowadays. Its pretty brutal, like Miller's comics. And there's a lot of adult themes in too. Crooked cops, police brutality, underage hookers and pimps, adultery, etc.

It definitely ain't the Superfriends.

Here's the wiki on the storyline (*SPOILERS*)- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Year_One

Cheers, nephews watched the last Batman / Superman (Apocalypse) offering on a sleepover but I didn't pay much attention until I saw Kara...

No wonder they're "into" it...

Yeah, my 4 year old saw this the other day so we grabbed it and fired it up....Mom made us turn it off about 20 minutes in.  It's definitely not aimed at children.

I've been tempted on this one.  Haven't pulled the trigger yet.  Was a big fan of the Bruce Timm / Kevin Conroy  animated show.

It wasn’t so much the PG-13 content (Implied prostitution, Adult situations, Blood) as much as the shoddy story telling over the top human physics and bad voice acting. It seemed like every five minute clip was this random moment that didn’t tie into the next very well at all. Case in point Bruce decides to disguise himself and take a trip into the seedy part of town….for no apparent reason other than to introduce the character to Catwomen. Serious…there is no point to that five minute outside of an action sequence. Sure it was dark….but simply being dark doesn’t make it good. I felt like I was watching out-takes the entire time.

but to each his own.

I did like prior animated "Batman and The Red Mask"

The part that shows Bruce's first foray into Gotham as a vigilante? The one where he is a complete failure? The one that shows him that he needs a persona that inspires fear in the hearts of man? I'd say there was a point to it.

I wouldn't say its bad, but one thing I do wish they would do is use dedicated voice actors instead of "big name" hollywood stars. It really does make a difference.

Unrealistic physics? How realistic do you want them to be in a world that has a guy wearing a cape and fighting crime? (I do think the finale's chase sequence is farfetched, though. In the comic, Bruce used a bicycle. Yeah, not much better.)
I'm curious, have you read the original Frank Miller Year One comics from the late '80s? This is pretty faithful to it, especially the story structure. I guess my admiration for them could be influencing how much I like this cartoon.

Like you said, to each his own.

I do think Under The Red Hood is the best of the DCU animated films so far.

Its quite a bit more adult than The Animated Series (which I love).

We've established how much I like this movie, but I'm not buying it until it hits the discount bin. It is worth a Redbox rental, though. IMO.

I concur, "Under the Red Hood" was phenomenal, and as far as I'm concerned one of if not the best animated DC film to date.

My only issue was that it was too short. Other than that I liked it.
