Not a slam I just didn't know this. They can't eat milk and meat at the same meal. No cheeseburgers or lasaga or pizza. (with meat) They can't even use the same pots to cook meat and milk, they have to have separate pots for each. On the Sabbath they can't even pick up a tool they use for work, i.e. a pencil for an accountant, because they might forget and start working. Work on the Sabbath is that forbidden. Grape products made by non Jews can't be eaten. |
Ummm thats not "false gods"... youre new here, you're gonna love the religious stuff. |
|
This is what some commentators brought up when Lieberman was running for President. He wouldn't talk on the phone on sunday to anyone. If a crisis happened he would have to use a interpreter to relay a message on the phone. You can find things in any religion that seems strange. |
Do you really think we are praying to false Gods? |
It really is all a continuum of how observant they are. If you are really observant, then yeah - you cannot eat food that has been prepared using utensils in which meat and dairy products were mixed. (I actually keep several bowls and utensils at my house that have never been used for anything, just in case). But for some, that are still observant, but not fanatically so, they can just avoid mixing meat and dairy in what they eat - and don't worry too much about how it was prepared. Several of my TA's are in this category - one of them will not eat pizzas with meat, but will eat vegetarian pizzas - even though it is obvious that domino's are not separating meat and dairy in their utensils, cooking, etc. And for others, they really don't care too much at all, but it doesn't necessarily make them any "less" Jewish per se (although orthodox jews might disagree) - just less serious about observing the strict rules. An Israeli good friend of mine in Denmark occasionally ate pork rinds - but very strongly identified himself as a jew.

It is called intercession. Catholics do not see saints as deities. There is a huge difference.

many of the rules they have regarding foods, have to do with the associated risks regarding bacterias and poisons if those foods are collected, stored or prepaired incorrectly. As far as working on the sabath well heck man, slacking off in temple is a heck of a lot better than busting you ass in the fields. but i also i know more than a few hard core cathloics that still frown at the idea of women folk wearing pants and eating meat on fridays ![]() |
Right. But other denominations of Christians might consider it slightly odd - and might see some of the prayers and reverence towards figures like the virgin Mary as something approaching idolatry - regardless of what Catholics call it, and how they justify it to themselves. I'm not personally saying it is - but I can certainly see how some other denominations could see it that way. |
Catholics don't pray to saints, Catholics ask saints to pray for us/everybody. |
No Marabou Chocolates for you now!!!!!
|
"Y'all pray to Mary!" A guy I knew in college said that to me when he found out I had gone to catholic school. Completely out of the blue just because I mentioned the name of the high school I went to. That's what they told him in hillbilly bible school I guess. I hadn't been a practicing catholic for YEARS and he still always to picked fights with me over this weird stuff he had been told about catholics. "Saying the rosary is praying to an idol you know" "Dude I don't care, besides you get drunk every weekend and screw a bunch of girls that I'm pretty sure you aren't married to" 'I'll repent!" Anyway obviously I don't know all the jewish restrictions on eating and cooking, but I guess a lot of that was practical stuff from a health standpoint back when those rules were created. I don't think I know any jews who keep strict kosher, seems like it would take a fair degree of thinking ahead for meal preparation, but I guess it would become a habit like anything else. |
I was just thinking, what if he is wrong. And then I said a small prayer for him. |
I pray to my Mom also. We pray to Saints, so they will pray for us. We DO NOT worship Saints or family members. Big difference and that is where the confusion lies. |
A lot of the rituals, procedures, and rules in various religions are utterly silly and will make you ask yourself "Who the hell thought this crap up?" There are so many religions and they have so many different conflicting things. Hundreds or thousands of years ago I'm sure there were even more things that were practiced that we would feel ludicrous. Things like burning non believers alive, etc.But what do I know, I'm just an ignorant sinful heathen and agnostic. What I think doesn't matter because I don't think the same way or I don't understand.
|
That is pretty messed up. Some folks put way to much effort into the 'day of rest'... |
Must suck for the husbands of prostitutes. |
I remember hearing that there was a business in Israel that was trying to import tapirs from South America, because it wouldn't be prohibited (I guess the feet aren't cloven or something), but it apparently tastes a lot like pork. So I guess if you made "bacon" from a tapir (and it was butchered correctly), it could be kosher. I've also heard that people taste like pork. Is there a Jewish prohibition against cannibalism, or is it just considered bad manners? |
There's Turkey Bacon which I don't really care for... but almost all of my Jewish friends eat bacon... |
|
No. Jesus died for our sins. he IS NOT the guy we pray to. When we pray we generally say something along the lines of "our god" or dear god" at teh beginning. NOT jesus. Jesus was a guidnace tool god used to help those of us sinners that want to be forgiven a way to do that. Some folks mix up jesus and god as the same fwllow. They are two different entities. SW |
Quick question... who is "we"? Secondly.... you are correct... 2 different entities! Very good! your stock just went thru the roof with me! ![]() |
And that is also 100% wrong. The bible rejects such "intercessions" on the part of any one. I know technically that CAtholics claim that they only "ask" some saint to pray FOR them as opposed to actually worshipping them, but in either case it is idolitry and it is verboten. It pre supposes that some how God is too busy to hear the prayer of the average Schlub and somehow Mary can poke his elbow or something and whipser in his ear on your behalf. Intercession prayers are shirk! If you want to know what passages forbid this just crack open any old bible and it says it in black and white. Do not pray to the dead, do not look for your ancestors for somekind of devine help. Now, may i ask where did you find out about those Jewish rules?? And why? |
okay lets have some fun ![]()
no worries dude.
not just that, can't cook dairy in meat dishes/ovens/utensils and vice versa, and have to wait 5 hours (that's my opinion, some have 5 some 6, don't believe the '3' crowd) between meat and milk. I didn't know lasagna was supposed to ahve meat in it till I was 24. ![]()
whoops, shoulda read that first! most religious jews have 2 complete kitchens made into one. or even 3 (one more for non-meat/non-dairy) or even 4 (one for passover too) kitchens.
it's not 'work' as we use the word that's forbidden per say. there are two classes here. a) the acts that are expressly forbidden are those that were used to build the tabernacle in teh desert. Since it says that G-d refrained from 'work' (a speicific word) and the sages connect this to the 'work (same speicific word) to make the tabernacle, those acts (39 big ones, and each has hundreds if not thousands of subdivisions) are forbidden. b) then there's a class of activities that were prohibbited to ensure that you don't come clsoe to violating 'a)' class violations since they are so intricate and hard to know them all and where the line between right and wrong stops (these extra 'b)' prhibitions are MORE than welcome cause violating a) gets you the death penalty. no little slap on the wrist, no lashes) e.g. you can't plant on sabbath is an 'a)', you can't spit onto grass on sabbath is a 'b)'. It gets so complicated that it makes the US tax code look like the highlights magazine.
I'll see your comment and raise you one: wine and most grape products TOUCHED by non Jews can't be eaten. ![]() on the other hand, the dietary laws mean that as fat as I get and as bad as I eat, I'll never be a mcdonalds three tiems a day and taco bell for dinner guy. the sabbath laws give me the most amazing experience every six days. wouldn't trade it for the world. Yeah, I miss out on some jobs that I've always wanted to do (LEO, military, etc), but look at the everyman's day of rest and its TV and beer and meaningless (hey I like sunday's too

| chapperjoe-Does the no work on Saturday rule really apply to military service or law enforcement work? If a jewish village is attacked or catches on fire on Saturday wouldn't there be some exception for emergencies or work necessary to preserve the life of another, like a jewish doctor taking action to save the life of another? |
Uhhhmmm.... are you saying your interpretation of the Bible is the only way? Why do you think. It is interesting. Sites I visited, I also talked to a couple of Jewish people I know. uwacadweb.uwyo.edu/religionet/er/judaism/JRLIFE.HTM www.jewfaq.org/kashrut.htm |
The way I read it, if it was really needed you can work. |
My rabbi explained to me once that allowing sick people, pregnant women, and very small children to eat on days when one is supposed to fast is OK because the highest mitzvah one can preform is saving a life. I'd guess the same applies here - it would be OK to put out a fire/kill some bad guys on saturday morning, ie in an exigent situation, but not "go into work" if that makes sense. |
- but very strongly identified himself as a jew.
