I've got a weird problem with my 2000 Ford Explorer with 156,000 miles. When I take it out in the morning I drive just fine for the first 1/4 mile or so. Then it is as though I've put it in neutral. Three or four seconds of the 'neutral' and I'm off. After that, everything is fine for the rest of the day.
Any thoughts? |

Mine is a 2003 and it started doing this AFTER I had it serviced at 70K. It's a sealed transmission and if it hasnt been serviced at 30K+ its most likely going to have particles in the fluid and it will slip. I bought it used at 50K and the manual stated that it doesnt need to be servied until 150K. I did it early bc I thought it would help. Turns out the fluid had lots of particles in it.
Mine does the exact same thing. And it only does it once and then its good. It will usually be at a stop sign and it will slip into neutral then I have to gas it a bit to get it back into 1st and its good for the rest of the day. Once in awhile it will be while I am driving and it will slip out, RPMs go up, then slip back in and its good for the rest of the day. If you want to go get it serviced then go for it, but I think it would be a waste of money. I am going to drive mine until it tanks then get it rebuilt. ETA: Yours is the 4R70 type transmission? If it isnt sealed check the fluid. It may just be low and slippage might occur |

Change the fluid and filter. You might want to try Mobil 1 ATF. It's Mercon V rated for Fords. Because it's a full synthetic, it works far better in temperature extremes. It may be that your trans is starving for fluid, as it pumps into all the components and won't drain back fast enough.
Try warming your car up for a good long while before driving. See if that helps. If so, it's likely a temperature related issue. |
