You can't compare a two stroke to a four stroke based on equal cc's. KTM's 300 XC-W is an awesome bike, but then again so is their EXC / XCF 450 and 530 bikes. 2009 Maico 685cc 2 stroke ENDURO model... I was pretty leary of going to a two stroke last year. After having my KTM 300EXC for the last 8 months, none of my other bikes have been out of the garage longer than to just make sure they still start.
I have a friend with a Husky 570 like the one pictured above. It's a beast and very cool bike. |

Here is some more good info on two strokes.

Quoted: Perhaps KTM is doing so well because all the other manufacturers have moved towards 4 stroke? this is NOT why KTM is kicking ass! KTM is the best at what they do, along the lines of Aprilla, 'Burg, and Husky. The Jap bikes are lacking all the way around, even Honda. I bet you put Johnny Campbell on a tricked out KLR he'd make IT the king of Baja, so don't even toss that out there. Two strokes have their place, as do 4 strokes. |

I am chief among 2 stroke aficionados. I really love the 2 stroke engine, it's power delivery (when properly set up) and it's light weight.
I am a fairly heavy guy weighing between 200 and 240. However, I cannot lift a 300 pound dirt bike over a 18 inch log. I simply can't do it. That is why I ride big bore 2 strokes. I can lift a 220 pound bike out of a hole, over a log, up a hill, whatever it takes. Plus, I have never come across a 4 stroke bike that has more power than my modified CR500's or modified KX500's. Not to mention the actual power to weight. Prior to the NJ pine barrens closing down, my CR5 was simply king (for me), with a 120MPH top speed in the sand. The only bikes that came close was a KTM640 LC4 with major mods and a XR650R with the baja 1000 engine setup. However, both of those were too heavy for me. Franklin |

Bought a KLR650 thinking I'd bring it on the trails....yea, sure.
Watch out for your collarbone. That KLR will knife in, in the sugar sand. Sending you over the bars and shoulder first into the sand. Guess which bone breaks? This is why I no longer own a KLR. Keep it on the street and you'll be fine. Franklin |
