I drive a 2002 Suburban K1500. 122,000 miles.

back in February, i noticed a minor whine from time to time. Sounded like a front differential or driver's side wheel bearings. I took it in, and they said it was too quiet to pin down...drive until it gets worse. So i did. In that time, I noticed that it whines more when in 4Auto/4WD than in 2WD. I took it to a different place this time. They had the truck for 3-4 hours, and said it's definitly in the front diff. They said since they'll have to take it off and open it up, they recommend replacing all the bearing in it. Odds are that's what the problem is anyway.

The quote was $188 for the carrier bearings kit, and $510 for labor.

This is my first 4WD. I had a differential in my 2wd ranger a while back, and it was around $1200 to replace. But that's the only comparison i have. Does this sound like a decent price? Anything i need to watch out for? This location is about the most reputable in town, so i'm not too worried. The other place i took it to was more of a mom and pop chop shop.

Its alittle steep, but your piece of mind is worth it..did they check the fluid level in the diff?

Not sure if they did. I had it changed last fall. Had it checked again in February, and they said it looked good (not burnt, no shavings, etc). I have a mechanic friend that mentioned the aluminum differentials don't seem to hold up as well for some reason. The shop i got the quote from also said this is somewhat common with GM's for some reason.

The other place was in the same neighborhood price wise.
