I have a 1999 S-10 4x4 with a 4.3 V6 in it. I just noticed today that all 3 bolts on the harmonic balancer are backed all the way out. The center bolt is still in it which leads me to think that the 3 bolts is not what holds it on the crankshaft. I know it's pressed on. 3 Months ago I had quite a few things done to it at a local shop in town. I thought they were reputable but now I guess not after the issues I've been havning.

Here is a picture.

I tried to tighten them but they are stripped. I do not have the necessary tools to fix it. My guess is that the shop used the 3 bolts as a method to press the balancer back on the crankshaft.

The three bolts are to fasten the pulley (for the belt) to the balancer. The large center bolt secures the balancer to the crankshaft. If you tried to tighten them with the tension on the belt you could have damaged the threads further. You will have to loosen the belt next time, but if they are stripped already you need to remove the pulley and if you can't re-thread or clean up the threads to hold the pulley then you need a need balancer and new bolts. You can try a little blue Loc-Tite if they can be snugged enough to work for now.

Thank you for the help guys. I don't think I'm gonna drive it 15 miles to work in the morning. I don't have loctite readily available.

Tighten them back up as no loc tight is needed (25ft lbs +/- 3ft lbs)....  May not of been the shop...  Check the rubber around the balancer for damage and the idlers and acc. for 'play'.  Have you noticed any vibrations from the engine??

ETA:  Didn't read the last line about them being stripped....  Chances are that the bolts are damaged and not the balancer.  If it is only the bolts get a thread chaser and run it through the balancer and clean up the holes....  If the balancer is stripped do not use heli-coils get an new dampener....
