Came on the other day.  Car is running fine but idling a bit rough.  No change in fuel economy.  I looked it up and it says 'Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)'.  I have been doing all freeway driving instead of stop and go since we moved two weeks ago.  Before that the car saw maybe 500 highway miles per year.  If I clear the code it takes 2-3 days to come back on.

I did have my catalytic converter replaced end of last year.  Is this more likely to be the converter or the oxygen sensor?  The place that installed the converter will charge me $65 to diagnose the code.  I could replace the O2 sensor for about that.  The converter is still under warranty so that would be free replacement if it's bad.

This is on a 99 Ford Taurus with just about 100K on it.

1:The catalytic converter is no longer functioning properly
2:An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
3:There is an exhaust leak

Does the CC rattle? or leak?
Has the O2 sensor been damaged from the CC  install?
Check the wiring to the O2s.....

Factory converter or aftermarket garbage?

I'm assuming aftermarket.  Midas installed it.

If the code is specifically pertaining to bank #2, I would think the bank#2 oxygen sensor is bad. (after checking the sensor connector first.)

If the repair is'nt done quickly, you could damage the catalytic converter.

100,000 miles is a long time for an O2 sensor.
If you haven't replaced it then it is overdue. Drop in a sensor (or two, whatever it takes) and see if that fixes it.

O2 sensors rarely if ever cause cat efficiency codes; if anything, P0430 is telling you the O2 sensor is working.

With exhaust bits, usually you get what you pay for.  I'd drag it back to Midas and get them to recheck their work.

+1

p.s. If you are setting a bank 2 cat code then you have more than 1 cat.
