When I clutch in to stop or go around a slow corner I stall 8/10 times. Also, sometimes accelerating the engine seems like it isnt "pulling" briefly. Where should I start looking? Its an 89 jeep xj cherokee. Also, I dont know if its related, but the tachometer registers in neutral and first, but in any other gears (3-5) it never reads about 2k rpms... |
| If all the basics are good, tune up etc...Check fuel pressure and filter for any restriction. If it stalls at idle check the Idle Air Controller. Give it a few taps with a screwdriver, it could be stuck, very common problem on Jeeps. Also check your ignition system.. |

Is it an inline 6? You might want to check the intake manifold gasket. The cast iron manifolds hung on the head and would slowly start to leak. The aluminum intakes were not so heavy and didn't cause so many problems. With the air filter assembly on the vehicle spray some carburetor cleaner on the intake gasket area. Use short bursts so you don't get a lot of fumes. If there is a definate increase in idle speed it may be leaking. Also look around for split or disconnected vacumn lines. There is a lot of heat behind the carburetor or throttle body and the lines get very brittle. Good luck. |
+1 check for leak around manifold or in vacuum hoses SS |
