I plan on buy new rims soon and I would like them to stick out just a little bit past the the fenders. the stock backspacing on my Xterra is a +40mm offset (5.50" backspacing, some say 5.25" What backspacing would I need?

Need a LOT more info...

a) How much space is currently between your fender and your stock tire sidewall?

b) How much space is currently between your frame and your stock inner tire sidewall?

c) How wide are the wheels you are interested in? Stock width?

d) How wide are your stock tires?

e) How wide are the tires you are interested in?

f) How tall are your stock and future tires?

FWIW, "offset" does not equal "backspacing". 2 different measurements.

lol, That is alot. Im keeping the same tires and wheel width (7inch) but I might have figured out my answer. to get it to stick out further would I just subtract off the current backspacing?

I believe you are correct. To stick out you would need like 3.5" backspacing.
