| i've got an 05 accord. my last road trip a rock hit my a pillar and caused the paint to come off. there is no dent, just a 1/8" square of bare metal. this happened back in the summer, since this isn't my dd i have put it off and put it off. i noticed rust today. what can i do to remove and stop the rust? the basic and cheap way. |
real fine sandpaper, primer and paint. Dont go crazy with the sandpaper or get some emory cloth type stuff. Mask off the area really good, like 4x5 bigger than the area your painting, Once you sand off the rust, make sure its all gone. Wipe down the area with alcohol and dry it with a clean papertowel. Put a lite coat of primer and wait a good hour for it to try, if you do it in the sun, that is better. Once the primer is dry, hit the area with paint very lightly. you want to start spraying about 2-3" beyond your spot (reason for over masking the area) and then go over the spot and keep spraying past the spot, you dont want to stop anytime on the spot you want paint on. Hold the can about 4-6" away from area when doing it. Let that coat dry for a good 20min or so and then go over it again, just dont stop moving the can left to right or right to left, this is how you get runs. Once its dry, you could do a coat of clear, but i rarely do. Its pretty simple process, when done correctly it doesnt look bad. |

Take it easy with the sandpaper though. The metal is SUPPOSED to have been hot dipped prior to priming and painting which is the #1 reason why cars aren't supposed to completely rust out. Primer and paint are quite porous and even bare metal with a few coats of primer and paint will still rust out. The anti-rust corrosion protection applied at the factory is *supposed* to prevent rusting. I'm kind of surprised this would happen on a 2005 Accord. Was it in some kind of accident before you bought it? By "bare metal" do you mean the metal surface under the paint? That should still have the coating but apparently it doesn't. |

I'd scrape it off with a knife then slap a big drop of paint in the hole and brush it level with a toothpick. Act fast before it skins over. Less noticeable than sandpaper. Honda paint sucks. Ours looks like the surface of the moon up close at the leading edge of the hood. It's also an 05 model. I'm too lazy to fix it yet. |

This is why new automotive paint sucks. www.goodspeedmotoring.com/?page=modern_paint |
holy crap it's pricey but I'm tempted to get it for when I get around to doing something to my frame this summer I have some light rusting in spots and my goal for the summer is to pait the enitre underside of my car and the rust spots in teh engine compartment |
POR-15 is some really good stuff. It's better to buy it in the smaller quantities to have a fresh can for each application. I refinished the nerf bars on my pickup and the stuff really holds up. I managed to get some on my arms and it's still on there after a week and a half. |
