This may be a dumb question... but all they do is store electricity from the engine and give off pulses of electricity to the spark plug.
As long as they're wired up properly, could you mix and match them and have some degree of success?

If I understand your question correctly, no. They have to go to the correct cylinder so as to match the firing order. Or do you mean swap one for another directly?
