I just bought an 04 WR250 the bike is on great shape an runs great but I want to go ahead and change everything out maintenance wise (oil, spark plug, any other fluids) so I know where the bike is at mechanically.. I really just need some basics like what kind of motor oil to use, best spark plug to use, air filter maintenance, and any other filters I need to be changing....I would really appreciate any help you guys can give! I have read the owners manual but I know how valuable information can be from people that ride a lot and have experience to share...I have this posted on another forum but questions always get answered here so I figured what the hell might as well try! Thanks for any information you guys are willing to share.. KJC |

In addition to the owners manual, pick up a service manual for the bike. With this you can basically strip it all down and put it back together again. Search around for some different forums for your bike and chat with the other users on it to see what they are running. On my SV650 I was first running expensive Suzuki oil as I didn't know better, but now I'm running Shell's Rotella T, which is actually Diesel oil in 15w-40 weight, where my bike calls for 10w40. A lot of people on the SVrider.com website swear on the oil and some of them have close to or over 100,000 miles on their bikes. I made the switch at 6,000miles and immediately felt a difference. Since the clutch also shares the engine oil the shifting was way less notchier and really smoothed up. I made a personal choice to switch from the regular suzuki plugs to some iridium tipped ones and they made start up faster and idle a lot smoother. You probably won't find anyone on this site to give you much help, but get a service manual and look for an owners group/forum to get some feedback on all your questions. good luck. |
Thanks, that helps a bit I have posted basically the same question on dirtrider.net but a lot of questions go unanswered over there... |

is this the 4 stroke model? if so then get a good oil as the engine and tranny may share the oil. With my racing 2 strokes I always ran good oil in the tranny and changed it often. I never had clutch problems or gear issues that way. if the forks are like the old WR I had you will need special fork oil for it, expensive but worth the money esp if it has not been changed. Clean the air filter and wipe some axle grease around the inside of the airbox to help catch some more dirt. make sure the filter seals properly also. I allays used to use some grease where it mates to the box. Yank the wheels and check the bearings, replace/lube as needed. (on a sealed bearing if you are careful you can pop a seal and grease them. I usually use a pocket knife with a thin blade to do it. ) get a spoke wrench if you don't have one and tighten the spokes. if you hit them with the wrench they all should sound the same. not a dull sound but a nice ting sound. change antifreeze if water cooled. safety wire the cap on also you NEVER want to pull that sucker when hot or have it knocked off by a branch. tires, check them and replace the tubes if the are original. get a set of tire spoons to do this with. go over all the nuts and bolts and make sure they are tight. rear suspension linkage, again inspect and replace as needed. put it up on a stand to do this. lube any lube points. (was allways a sore spot they didn't add zerk fittings everywhere. |
Yeah its the four stroke model... what about an oil filter? |
