Just an update.

Headers, plugs and wires are installed. Harmonic balancer gets here today and I will get more stuff installed this week.

How much wiggle room do you have on that front plug?   Seems the heat sleeve doesn't leave a lot of room for a socket there.

What size exhaust are you planning on using or building?

Looking good though!

Only one of the plugs was a bugger to start and I don't recall which one it was. Every other one was fine.

I think we are going 2.5" duals with an x pipe. We will have it custom bent locally.

Keep in mind that typical muffler shop bends are something like 18-25% smaller than the tube size started out.  A 2.5" bend becomes about 2".

We worked on some engine bay wiring yesterday. My stepdad also got the transfer case bolted back in.

The new pulley kit came in and I was going to install the alternator but I noticed a bearing squeeze when I turned the pulley. So I guess I'll order a new one. Lol. Story of my life with this truck.

I see the plug wires, what are you using for ignition system?

There's a lot of SBC threads this past few years and I can't keep up while some are finished and others picked full swap and others a rebuild.  So plenty of variety, just lose track of who has what where.

Good question.

I went with the process ignition small distributor setup. It's controlled via bluetooth on an app. You can adjust timing on the fly if needed. I am still learning the setup.

That sounds interesting.  Never heard of a bluetooth controlled distributor, that almost sounds like an oxymoron, like a wi-fi typewriter.

You only use the app if you want to change timing tables or other options. Once it's set you don't need the app unless you want to make a change.

Sounds nifty!  Does it give you more options than advance, do you have a link?  I'm curious how the insides would work to change lobes realtime.

I really like the PIN code lockout for engine to prevent theft.  That's and excellent perk in addition to all the other typical distributor headaches removed.

It makes it a lot easier to adjust the system without having to remove the cap, change springs, adjust timing, etc. Some people like to nerd out and constantly fine tune the motor.

If you run poor fuel or a higher quality you can adjust for that too.

You can also lock the system so the ignition doesn't work.

I got the truck back from the exhaust shop yesterday. Man, it sounds sweet and is a hoot to drive around.

The exhaust shop owner said he thinks there is a miss in the engine. You can hear it sound a little rough at idle. I tried to adjust the carb and it helped but you can tell it needs some more adjusting.

I also talked to the distributor manufacturer and he gave me some other adjustments to make. He wants me to burn off the old fuel , probably 87 octane, and put some fresh 91 in it. He said that may be some of the hesitation.

Carbs are nearly black magic.  Which one are you using?   Sometimes easier to go back to factory settings and adjust from there instead of trying to figure out which one isn't quite right, or turning the wrong one and forgetting to turn it back and little stuff like that.  They're not rocket science, but there's definitely an art to tuning one for max performance without side effect issues for full spectrum of operation from idle to WOT.

Holley 850.

I set it to 1 1/2 out on all idle mixture screws and ran the idle up to 1100 or so. Then I adjusted the screws one at a time till I got the maximum vacuum (14) then I backed the idle down a little.

Is it the carb that came from BluePrint?  My 383 came with a generic Holley carb and it is widely accepted to be a basketcase and not worth messing with.  I monkeyed with mine a little but since I had a Sniper 2 sitting on the shelf I swapped it out (along with the Hyperspark distributor) and it's never ran better.  Still tuning on it a bit, but so far it is really crisp.

No its not. It was a carb that I got used from the shop I bought the motor from. It's very lightly used. Only a few hours on it in total. That being said, I do not know what jets are installed in it.

A wideband O₂ sensor / Fuel Air Ratio to tweak things, but costs as much as your distributor.

Well I found the vacuum leak. It was the intake. I used the wrong gaskets. Turns out a standard sbc gasket won't work and I needed a thicker one for vortex heads.

I got home this afternoon and hit the intake with some carb cleaner and sure enough it tried to die. So I removed the intake and reinstalled it with the correct gaskets. Now I need to get everything back on and retime it as the distributor won't go back into alignment where I had it marked. Oh well. That wont be hard just another step to deal with.

I just decided to check by spraying carb cleaner around the intake. As soon as I hit the first spot it about died.

Well, a new intake gasket is installed, and I have taken it for a few short trips. Today I drove it a few miles and stopped at a hardware store. When I went out to the truck I started it and drove away. When I got in the throttle it started sputtering and died. No restart. I let it sit for a few minutes while I made a few phone calls and it would restart but die almost immediately. Looking at the fuel filter there was hardly any fuel in it. The incoming fuel would spit and barely go in the filter.

I had it towed home and when it got there I turned it over for a few seconds and it started. The fuel filter filled up to 80% or more and it ran fine. So I took it for a drive and after a few miles, it started to act up again. When I popped the hood there was barely any fuel in the filter.

I checked and there was no vacuum or hissing when I removed the fuel cap. With the motor off and it just sitting you can see fuel slowly going back into the filter. Usually followed by a little bubble then more fuel.

My instinct is I got a bad fuel pump, or there is something in the tank that is getting picked up after it runs for a bit. But, I had zero issues before the new motor. Tank is the same, pickup is the same, etc. Just a new motor and fuel pump.

Some of the internet says vapor lock but I just don't think it's getting that hot. The headers are close to the fuel line on the frame but not that close.

Add a pusher pump on the tank side and it should turn out fine, even if it's vapor lock from fuel line too close to hot spot, fresh gas pushed in will keep it going.

First, make sure tank pickup filter isn't gummed up.

I'm planning on pulling the in tank pickup tube today.  I don't think there would be an issue in there as I drove the truck for a few years with zero issues but it will eliminate that potential  issue.

Just talked to Carter who makes the fuel pump and they said they have had a lot of issues with that pump. He called them low flow issues and said I described them to a T.

A new holley fuel pump was installed yesterday. I took it for a drive and I experienced no issues. Hopefully, that was the fix.

Damn wish I saw this earlier.

I started with a Holley pump and trashed it immediately.  Pressure was all over the place, but mostly almost 50% higher than what it was supposed to produce.  Switched to an Edelbrock and zero issues.

If I remember it was supposed to be 6psi and was constantly banging 9psi

So, is it completed or are there still little bits or entire steps in the queue yet?

It's what my stepdad bought from the performance shop. I guess we will see how it does. They are not hard to install, minus one of the bolts is kind of a bugger to get too.

Well.......

I am chasing a few small leaks. Test and tune the motor. I am supposed to put 500 miles on it before it's considered broken in. If I can do that this fall before I put it away for the winter, that will be a stretch.

I forgot but I have a full disc brake conversion kit I will probably install on the rear-end this winter.

Something to stay busy with at least.   How does it sound with the new Proper exhaust system?
