A rather disappointing day working on the BRDM. Hooked up the PKT solenoid and the firing circuit works. I changed the transmission oil. It was very low and nasty. Flushed it with 2 gallons of extra 90w I had then poured in 8ish liters of ep90.   The PTO is the fill hole for the entire trans.  Shifts much smoother now and the synchros are actually functioning well and it hits second gear without any problems! Ya. While driving it with @m35ben it started making weird noises. PTO was spinning the winch. Not sure if it’s supposed to spin. F. Then it died. I know it’s not broken, it’s a Good running vehicle. It’s probably out of gas.  10 gallons of USA’s finest Dino juice dumped in the tank and it fires right up. m35ben noticed it’s leaking coolant all over the battery and right side of the engine bay. F. So we power it back to the stall and change the front right tire with a new one and contemplate the meaning of 40 year old rubber failing.   |

The Russians take them and cut the tops off and make off road buggies out of them with pretty much all original components. The parts are all solid and good, they’re just old and not used much. Not many 40 year old vehicles with 1500 miles on them running all original stuff. It all fails at some point. After coming from the Czech army to the seller then to the USA in 2008-2010 it sat for several years. |

They had the Btr60 running, not the brdm. It has a seized engine. After 9 years and with a massive amount of mechanical work from @m35ben we hit the road. It was absolutely exhilarating hitting the road and going to the gas station. And of course as always armor causes a huge traffic jam due to speed and people Rubber necking. Top speed was 25 due to being a shake down cruise. Filled it up with 18 gallons of unleaded 87. Two things: We have a big hydro leak Stuck brake |

I’ve been assuming you guys knew that the Army has a large pile of Combloc vehicles at Ft Irwin in Barstow Ca? They captured a bunch of BRDM’s, BMP 1’s and T54’s/T55’s, and a couple of T62’s. They might have a BTR60 as well, but I cant recall. I know for a fact they had at least 2 or more BRDM’s as I saw two of them together at the same time. I dont know if they still have them, but I’d bet if you were able to get in touch with the guys maintaining them, they’d probably be able help you locate or fabricate parts? What was amusing was the way they mocked up BRDM’s from HMWV’s and how they mocked up T72’s from old M551 Sheridan’s. The foam barrel inserts they used on the Sheridans would bounce and bobble when the tank hit bumps...it was cartoonish and always made us laugh. |

Sorry no pictures of the Fort Hood BRDMs. I have an MTLB, BMP2 and a couple of T-55s. And ALL the WWII vehicles. See if I can get them next time I go there. Camp Blanding Florida BRDM. They also have a T-55 and something I do not know what it is. Shaped similar to a M113 or FV103 but with 4 Soviet style roadwheels. EDIT: Found it. Norinco Type 63 APC. BRDM-2

Just across the street is a C-47 that they do keep up with pretty well. |

| Speaking of Ft Irwin. When I was stationed there in 95-96, we were tasked with cleaning up all the old hard targets/vehicles from the training area in the summer of 95. I operated a M88 at the time. We drug in everything from WWII to Vietnam era vehicles. The museum folks at both Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Ft Knox were very excited and flew out to NTC to look at and get rare M4 Sherman parts we found. I personally hauled in quite a few M114 armored scout vehicles that were from 60% to 90% complete. The oddest and biggest thing I hauled in was the M51 Heavy Tracked Recovery Vehicle. It was all two M88's could do to lift it high enough to get onto the lowboy trailer. We also recovered a M151 MUTT that only needed tires, fuel and a tune up to get it running. We drove the M151 for a bit around the training area until the Post Sergeant Major caught us. He made us drive it out to the main tank gunnery range and blow it up. I wish I had pictures of all that stuff |
