@ScottsGT or anyone else know of a good resource for window opening measurements on the Mustang?  Going from a coupe to a fastback I can't measure the rear window opening in the old car.

Mines all back together now.  But join up on the Vintage Mustang Forum.  Lots of help over there.

The car has 24k on the odometer so we assume it has 124k on it but it could be more.  It runs well but burns a little oil.  Those old straight 6's would run for a long time.  But, they never really made enough power to wear anything out
View Quote
In most cases they lasted longer because the gas present in the manifold didn’t drain into the cylinders as much on shutdown.  The gas as a solvent would remove the oil film from the walls

Early Chevy V8s were mounted slightly higher in the front than the back and typically those rear cylinders were the first to wear out.

Made some progress today.  Got the driver side inner fender well and dash out of the Mustang.  Drilling out spot welds is not my idea of a good time  While I was working on that the wife got started cleaning up her transmission.

Need to get these two panels cleaned up then put in primer.  The goal for tomorrow will be to get the new floor pan up on jack stand and leveled.

That doesn't look bad at all.  I think I was watching a show the other day that said the inner fender parts like that are integral to the rigidity to the car.  I'm not sure if that's the case on all cars or if it was the mustang they were talking about.  But I think it was.

Love your wife's Shirt.  I have not seen one like that.  It's my Daughter's 16th Birthday today and she's been listening to the Beetles a lot and I bough her Past Masters Volume 1 and 2 on CD.  I think she'll be happy.  I think that T shirt goes with that album.  LOL.

We need some after pics of the tranny when it's done.

Threw the quarter panel frames on the floor pan real quick to see how they fit.  Not well is the answer  The frames themselves look very close but the wheel well is not anywhere near fitting correctly.  Thankfully the wheel wells are screwed to the frames so they can be fit easily.  I have a LOT of work ahead of me.    Beats the hell out of fixing rust though

It wasn't terrible but a few were a pain to get to.  Because I was not saving any of the panels it was welded to I could just through drill each weld instead of using the spot weld cutter which is a pain in the ass.

$6k ish.  Could have saved more money by buying the floor pan and frame rails in pieces vs complete but spent a little extra to save myself from having to build a jig to put it together.

Made a little more progress on the Mustang.  After a lot of not so gentle persuasion a buddy and I got the firewall tucked in between the floor supports and floor pan.  Got the cowl dropped in.  The quarter panel frames are very close to where they need to be.  The firewall position still needs worked on a bit.  In a holding pattern now until another few dozen C clamp vise grips show up.  Going to have quite the collection of them once I'm done

How are you keeping the body straight or planning to straighten it when you’re done?  There really isn’t enough structure to keep it straight without care.

Short answer, it's going to be a time consuming pain in the ass

Long answer, I'll wind up with lots of temporary internal bracing to keep everything straight and square until there is enough structure.  I spent most of the day today getting the inner rockers where they need to be.  They're getting close.  Couple more full days of fine tuning and I should have everything that's currently clamped on the floorpan square and true.  Then I can get some internal bracing installed and begin welding it out.  Then onto the front frame rails, torque boxes, inner fender wells and radiator support.

Not being a smart ass, but you do know to jump around with your spot welds?  Like a few in one area, and then jump to the other side of the car or panel?  Too much heat in one area, especially on a huge assembly like this, and you will have a very warped body when you are done.

I learned this the hard way many years ago with just a quarter panel on a customers car.

I would track overall chassis dimensions as you go. Welds shrink and pull.  I haven't done what you're doing but I have done chromoly space frame chassis and they will move all over the place.  Over time you just keep tweaking and can get it straight, but I had a chassis table to measure from at the time.

My big concern would be glass, trim, and body panel fitment.  Lots of mock up to make sure you don't end up having a car that needs custom trim or modified glass.

These cars had such bad fitting gaps when new, you can easily “over restore” one if trying to keep it all original.  Project like this one, Make it as best as you can!  Good thing about the glass on these cars is the rubber seals and the raw butyl rubber you pump in around the seals to make it water tight.

Nothing new on the Mustang.  Trying to get another project finished up and delivered to free up some space in the shop.  Won't get back on the Mustang until I get it finished up in a week or two.  Doing a mechanical restoration on a 1908 IH Tom Thumb hit and miss engine for a friend and local farmer.  Most of the ignition system is missing, piston was seized in the cylinder from 40 years worth of mouse piss and some Babbitt bearings needed repoured.

Unfortunately not much to update

Life has gotten in the way through the fall and winter.  Been tied up with some house remodels, work, finishing up my parents house.  Haven't gotten much at all done on the Mustang.  My wife has close to everything she needs for the engine swap on the Chevelle.  Just need headers and a few misc odds and ends.  The plan is to get started on the swap probably around the end of May.  Have to get through all of the major spring yard work and unfortunately I'll be working 7 days weeks 12 ish hours a day for most of May

Santa was nice to the wife and brought her a Flowmaster American Thunder stainless exhaust for Christmas.  Should sound good when done

Will be sure to update this thread once we start making some progress!

Frame jig is mostly done, one more set of supports for the front frame rails.  Jig has leveling feet in 6 places so it will sit level independent of the floor.  Jig is square to within +/- 1/16" and the body sat down on it to within +/- 1/16".  I got lucky

The wife is in the process of stripping the interior out of the Chevelle.  Will be getting redone and the correct seat brackets welded in for bucket seats.  Floor pan looks surprisingly good!  Only a couple minor rust spots that need attention.  Forgot to snap pics

We've determined that we need a bigger shop

Got the frame jig finished up today.  Wound up moving the front frame rail support back about 4" and adjusting the elevation on it.  This puts the front of the frame rails at the correct elevation from the datum and allows access to the bottom of them for welding the core support on.

Front end is mocked up.  Everything looks good dimension wise.  Now to tear it all back apart and start prep for welding it all together.  Have to strip some areas on the frame rails and hit them with weld through primer, layout and drill a lot of holes for the plug welds.

Almost looks like a car

Got the front end of the Mustang torn apart today to start prepping everything.  Have some epoxy primer on the way for the inside of the rockers and inside the cowl.

Chevelle disassembly starts tomorrow  Picked up an engine hoist today.  Decided to put a new core support in the car.  Hers has the small opening for the small radiator, going to the larger opening to fit the much more common larger radiator. Also a nice big rust spot in the current core support.

My wife is starting to round up parts for redoing the door weather stripping.  Has the correct stainless trim pieces on the way.  Current weather stripping is glued/siliconed into place  Not going to be fun to clean up.

The core support is notorious for rusting our on those A bodies. Mine was also, so the previous owner replaced it.
If you aren't representing Jesus in a way that makes people want to hang out with you, you're doing it wrong.

Awesome thread, cant believe I missed this before. Helped a buddy years ago rebuild a 70 Chevelle SS...unfortunately he sold it to fund an engagement ring.

Have been looking for a 64 or 65 Mustang for a few years. Got bored waiting for a good one at a reasonable price and being into offloading, I picked up a 94 Jeep Cherokee XJ that I'm rebuilding. Just got my new exhaust, 4.5" lift kit, gas tank, all new brakes etc in. Had a lot of rust and some floor pans were basically gone. New floor pans are now in and  waiting to take it to a shop to get a nice undercoating done.

Most farms back then did not have electricity. Other than cities/towns rural America did not get electricity till late 30’s.
