What's a good estimate for upper and lower ball joint replacement on a 2wd 09 Silverado on both sides. Dealership is quoting $1800. Looking at what an independent shop may charge.

I know that earlier 01 gm products you can buy whole control arms.  Seems high, find a good independent shop.

Yeah, for an 03 Silverado HD, you can get two whole new Cognito UCAs w/ balljoints for a lot less than that.

ETA: With uniballs, Cognito UCAs are $800 for your truck. If you're near me, I'd put them in for $500.

About four hours for the first side and three for the second. Watch a video and diy if you have a place to do it.

I can't do it myself I'm having back surgery Tuesday and I was hoping to drop it off somewhere and pick it up when I get out in a few days.

I paid $1600 for four ball joints plus front pads and rotors for my '04 Dakota a couple months ago.

Took about seven hours at $104 per hour.

WUUUTTT!!!!

I can change them on a ford in abt an hour apiece and Moogs or OEM on ebay aren't much...

You could buy a small shop for what you can save doing them yourself...

That sure sounds high for a 2wd, but I haven't worked on anything newer than a '95

That's pretty high,we(gm dealer) do them for about 1000 including alignment.

About half that sounds about right.

Ball joints are maybe $70 each, the local auto parts store will loan you the press.

Ball joints on a 2WD Silverado, 1 hour each is generous plus alignment, so figure maximum 5 hours labor plus parts. Moog ball joints are better than OEM. Price wise a price from a place like Rock Auto will be half of what the shop will charge for the part.

Uppers are replacing the entire arm but then you get upper arm bushings too which wears more than a upper ball joint in that suspension design. Lowers can have joints pressed in or arms replace.

Using Rockauto for a base price on Moog Premium parts Lower joints $37-39 each so a shop would charge about $80 each, upper arms $76 each so a shop would charge about $150 each.

$1000 should cover that job real easy unless your truck is a real rust pit.

Having just done this pricing this weekend, I was at $400 for the cheaper auto parts store on 4 Moog ball joints.  Amazon was only $200 for the same parts.  A 21 piece press kit is $99.  All of this will be here in two days.  I also bought the ball joint separator kit to try out.  All I have ever used over the years is a pickle fork and a stand up press,  so it will be interesting to see how this works out.

On a 4x4 it takes me just over an hour to remove the steering knuckle to get at the ball joints.  Probably another hour for the press.  This is per side. I would expect a shop to double or triple the time unless their rates are state regulated like California (BAR).

I agree Moog is better than OEM.  You can actually grease them because they have zerks.
