We got a huge HMMWV thread, lets see the CUCVs..

Are you a survivalist nut? Do you crave a real man's vehicle that will take you anywhere and let you pull tree stumps out of the earth if they get in your way? Are you looking for an authentic, "I've been to hell and I'm going back," rolling chassis with original toxic military grade paint (called CARC, which ironically stands for Chemical Agent Resistant Coating)? How about that perfect addition to the mountain militia armada?

Do you want a vehicle that features no complicated computers and electronics and still has the old round air filter housing that sits on top of the engine with a little butterfly nut instead of the goofy air canister casings that are off to the side and out of the way in the engine compartment found on modern cars? How about a bare bones - no carpet interior that embodies the spirit of the no-frills, exclusive society of men that own at least two handguns, two rifles and a shotgun, and secretly cry while watching movies like Gran Torino?
Then look no further than the ex-military M1009 CUCV. What the heck is a CUCV? It stands for Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle and was brought into military service as a converted civilian vehicle intended as an intermediary for the more expensive and capable amphibious Gama Goat and the rock climbing, trail blazing HMMWV. It is rumored that while the M1009 served in combat during Desert Storm, the results were "less than desirable," and it has been supplanted by the Humvee (HMMWV) it was intended to support.

I just got this one for free. Have to put the motor back together and buy a few things bunch of shit. Going to be a learning experience for sure.

The Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle or CUCV/LSSV is a vehicle program instituted to provide the United States military with light utility vehicles based on civilian trucks. It was originally intended to augment the purpose-built but expensive Gama Goats and M151 series jeeps approaching the end of their service life in the mid-1970s.[1] Initially, Dodge W/D series trucks were provided in the late 1970s with several military modifications. In the mid-1980s, Chevrolet C/Ks replaced the Dodge vehicles in CUCV I and CUCV II guise.

I know where there is a cucv..along with an M35A2 that have been sitting in the same spot for going on 20 years. they belong to a very eccentric millionaire that won't sell anything.

Ever since my buddy Glockfan68 got his truck and restored it to it's current condition, I've been kind of eyeballing CUCV's, just to see what's out there. If I ever come across a deal like the guy in that other thread ($1700 for a pretty remarkable runner), I'd probably jump on one too - but the timing will have to be right.

I've noticed that with most of these trucks, rust/corrosion seems to always be a factor above the fenders and at the bottom of the doors. Finding a truck without rust in at least one of those areas is surely a challenge.

The beauty of the CUCV is that it appeals to 2 crowds - the military vehicle type as well as those who are just into early-mid 80's Chevy full size trucks, which I happen to think is a pretty timeless look regardless of how old it is.

ETA: Glockfan is having an issue loading pics from work - the below pics are of his truck:

I really liked my 82 K5.  Problem was rust and parts breakage.  The more I drove it, the more it broke.  I finally hauled it off the scrap yard 4 or 5 years ago.  It was a heavy bastard, almost 6,000 lbs. with that 6.2 and the automatic transmission.

Every now and then I see a pretty decent looking 80's Chevy truck/blazer on the road but they are few and far between.

Not a CUCV, but here are some pics of the M887 maintenance contact team truck I bought while in Germany from 92-95. It was a '77 Dodge W200 w/318, 727, NP203, Dana 44 front & 60 rear w/4.09s. No power steering. The Wisconsin VG4D engine, 4kW generator, Hobart stick welder, and air compressor were all present, but the starter was junk and I never did get it started with the hand crank. The passenger side is all smashed up from 4-wheelin' earlier in the day, and in these pics I'm stuck a few miles from the Kaserne (Strassburg Kaserne in Idar-Oberstein.) Yes, I did make it that far under my own power with ~31" all-terrains LOL. The truck sat there all week because nobody had anything that could even reach it and I didn't want to ask the commander if I could take a humvee or HEMTT up to get it. The Saturday after getting stuck a friend and I went up with shovels & a come-along to get it out, and we ran into the farmer and his tractor. It was probably the easiest DM60 he ever made!

I suppose in a generic sense they are because they were commercial utility/cargo vehicles, but I'm pretty sure the actual CUCV designation refers only to the M1008/M1009 series.

Gotcha.

For the OP - Since they essentially pereformed the same roles, maybe the thread title can be changed to "CUCV Thread - Chevy or Dodge", or something to that effect so that thead can attract more people.

Well, the family of pickups was the M1008 family, which had all the variants you listed and more. The HEMTT family, for example, was the M977 family, and consisted of the M977 cargo truck, M978 tanker, M983 tractor, M984/M984E1 wreckers, M985 MLRS ammo truck, and maybe more by now. And all models of humvees fell under the M998 family designation.

You can probably find an 85-93 pickup, Suburban, or Blazer/Jimmy with 6.2l or NA 6.5l for a lot less. The only difference will be the pickups won't have 4.56s from the factory (3.08 was the most common Blazer/Jimmy ratio.) Blazers & Jimmys will have the 700R4 instead of the 400. Both the pickups & SUVs will have the SM465 4-speed up to 91, and the pickups got the NVG4500 5-speed afterward. (I believe the SUVs had a lighter-duty Getrag manual.) Plus it'll have the improved glow plug controller as opposed to the troublesome 82-84 models. Starting in 94 the injector pumps were electronically controlled, so avoid those.

I have an Ex Navy CUCV "1.5"  Which is a 1993 GMC K2500 5/4 ton 4x4 single cab pick up with the 6.2 Detroit Diesel (same as the Humvee) and heavy duty 4-L80 transmission with 14 Bolt rear with 4.56 gears with Posi-Traction locker ...  It has the US Property plates under the hood, and the data plates on the driver door panels.

It is a real a BEAST....   Will carry a Ton (literally!) anywhere you choose to go off road...

It had only 37K miles when I got it, mostly tootling around the base.  (Lucky for me the Navy guys don't do a lot of out in the field off roading)

I got it off a government auction and a member here (Tinythief) heroically pulled it back across Texas with his short bed v-6 Dodge Ram at about 45-50 miles per hour.  Thank You Tinythief - I still owe you all the beer and BBQ any time you want!

Tires were dry rotted but held air, both batteries dead, glow plug controller card bad, but it didn't take much to fix the old girl up and now she runs like a champ.

Got a deal on two Interstate high output diesel batteries (Blems) for 1/2 price with full warranty.  Found a new set of BFG All Terrain KO's 285-75-16 and some nice GMC sport rims for under $500 total

Had a local shop install a new & improved glow plug Controller card for under $100

Only things I wish I could magically change would be (A) those 4.56 gears (no 85 mph high speed cruising) & (B) the lack of A/C ...  in Houston ...  in the Summer ...

However it is a BEAST on the Trail (4.56 gears) ...   Strong like an Ox and powerful as one too.  I've pulled out a number of stuck-ee's

My son & I are getting ready for some Father - Son bonding time on our spring renovation.

Bilstein shocks, new rotors & pads,  We have found a nice brush guard - winch mount and doing some interior fix up (door handles, dash pad and recover the bench seat)

I have a M101A2 trailer that we are in process of converting to a expedition camper and planning to hit New Mexico, Colorado and Big Bend this summer.

I'll post pictures when I get a chance.

I see quite a few of the blazer ones around. I am a big chevy fan boy, but those dont do anything for me, crappy diesel, weak differentials, 3.08 gears, bare bones interior.

On the otherhand, i would love one of the pick up trucks, bare bones interior is great for a truck, d60 front axle, 4.56 gears, still crappy motor but would work with it.

CUCV's gets the strong axles Dana 60 or Dana 70 series front, and usually Super Stout rears like Dana 70's or GM 14 Bolt with locking differentials.

5/4 ton capacity makes any 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton pick up look weak.

A Popular upgrade seems to be to Yank the Diesel and drop in a salvage yard 350.

I'll be honest that the diesel does have some get down and pull torque at the low end but as all diesels, they just are not a high winding performance motor.

Since C.U.C.V. were .GOV and never had emission equipment, you get a free pass if you want to hot rod it.

Let's not go overboard. The M1008 is basically a K30, a mid-1980s 1 ton. The military just gave it its own rating. Many 3/4 ton platforms offered in the time since equal or exceed it.

My M1009 kept blowing starters.  Handled great in the snow though. I think I still have the TMs on CD around here somewhere.

I was going to do a Vortec or LS swap but ran across a good deal On a low mileage long block 6.2 out of another M1009.
The swap will be pretty easy. Going to pull tranny to clean it up and clean the engine bay up as well.
The 6.2 does allI want it to. The guy had a turbo, but I passed.
My old motor runs excellently but a previous owner wallowed out a starter mount bolt hole. Not a lot to do about that. It’s a shame, it runs so well.
