Yah. I know. Its a car and bike forum. This seems like the best place for this request.... Sorry if its out of place,
1995 Merc 25 HP outboard. Its run like a top for 20 years. Seriously reliable engine. Now I have a problem. It will start and idle fine. However, when I add throttle, it will bog down. Often as I add throttle, the engine seems non-responsive, and after a few seconds will bog down a die out. If I let off the throttle, it will sputter back to life. If I add throttle veeeeeeryy slowly, I can get the engine to start to accelerate. Once its up to half speed or more its all okay, no issues. I can cruise at half, 3/4 or full throttle all day. But if I back it to idle, good luck coming up to speed again. Suggestions????? Fro |
| First of all, check and make sure the fuel bulb is staying firm. Do you pump it a few times before starting the motor? Ethanol is known to eat the insides out of some older fuel lines, and the inside walls will literally delaminate. It wouldn't hurt to disconnect the lines and visually inspect them inside. If that doesn't solve your issue, clean and rebuild the carb. |

Either a fuel delivery problem, plugged carb, or more rarely, the timer base assembly (under the flywheel) is sticking not allowing the timing to advance.
<---Boat mechanic. ETA - This is assuming the compression is good and there's spark on both cylinders. No chipped or broken reeds either.
