The "Ol Reliable" took a shit  on me en route to deer hunting yesterday

87 Cherokee that has been admittedly abused, but loved.
My cousin and I stopped by Cabellas to get some ammo and other items and when I started the jeep up I heard an off noise in the engine compartment, popped the hood but couldn't identify it. Shrugged my shoulders and we started out. About 45 minutes away from my house I smelled the antifreeze, then lost power steering on the highway.

Coasted the jeep to the side and assessed the damage, I found the belt wrapped up but still A-OK... the water pump shit the bed, bearings went out and the shaft got crooked causing the belt to fall off... in a convenient spot with little to no reception.

I got the wife to get a new water pump and bring all my tools ("What's that?" was her resonse to specfic items so I say just bring em all.).

fast forward: installed the new pump on the side of the highway and from part failure to full function we were delayed about four hours... not bad since two hours was calling and waiting... then an hour to install and then wait to harden.

my cousin enjoying the moment.

we get to the hunting site and hear a hiss and see steam from the engine... damn hot water hose to the heater blew
I just rerouted it bypassing the heater as a temp fix, time to go install all new hoses in this monster.

lesson learned: Shit happens, be prepared by having at least a tool kit that can handle most repairs
Dont expect anyone to stop (nobody did... not even the Cops)

so what's your side of the road repair story?

your cousin looks like a fun dude.

Ive never had a side of the road repair. Although I did drive from Columbia SC to Orlando with a blown Slave cylinder once.  It was a 92 Wrangler.

Marine pump on an 03 low floor gillig on the side of I-95

aka the water pump on a commuter bus.

That was a doosie of a road call.

The other one was another low floor gillig that refused to move from a stop. Determined one of the shift solenoids was bad. Had to pull the rack of solinoids out of the Voith trans and tried to change them out with ones from another bus that was down in the lot.

Don't worry OP. It's no fun even when you do have the right tools for the job

But you do remind me to build a tool kit for my jeep

drove about 45m home in first gear because the transmission in my Blazer shit the bed. alternator dies in my XJ about a miles from home. broke down at my grandmothers house when the thermostat in my z71 locked closed. not bad for 20 years of driving.

My worst on-road breakdown was a broken accelerator cable for my F350. I actually had an almost-new one from a previous truck at home, but since I was 2 hours from home so I first called a couple Ford dealers, who had none, and as many parts places as I could find, who also had none. I ended up calling my brother to bring the one at home, it was about 3 hours before he got there and within 5 minutes I had it in. In a perverted sort of way I almost wish it had been a big enough repair to make the 3+ hour wait worthwhile. Now the next time I'm heading up north or to NH my injector pump will probably die on me, and I don't have a spare one of those.

I will see your seized water pump and raise you this..

A few years ago I lost the slave cylinder in the car about an hour from home on one the hilliest coastal roads around here. Drove home in third gear..

Alternator fell apart on an old volvo I owned..hour and a half from home..in the middle of a raging snow storm..

All in all..I've been fortunate.
