Got a couple of dirty bikes from a friend that needed work. They had been garaged for the last 5-6 years, with heads off in a box. They both needed engine rebuilds. I’ve never worked on 2-stroke bikes, but seeing as they were free, I dove in. Full bottom and top rebuilds after watching videos from RMATVMC. They are all shockingly good. The 300's will slowly putt-putt up steep narrow switchbacky trails without a hiccup, and will rip like cheetahs on coke when terrain allows. The 200 definitely has an old school powerband, but is surprisingly strong, and the bike is relatively small and light. So much fun. I was giggling. What they all have in common are power valves, which can be adjusted by turning a screw. Those adjust at what rpm the powerband comes on with a strong hit. They all also share map switches, which can be changed on the fly by pushing a button. When traction is good leave it in Sun mode. When things get slippery, push the button to choose rain mode, which really mellows and smooths out power delivery. The modern Keihin carbs add even more adjustability. It takes patience to learn them, but powerbands can be further altered to your liking. 2 strokes ain't what they used to be. |

My understanding of the modern 2-strokes, specifically the YZ, is that the engines are still very similar to what they were back in the early 2000s. Where the new models shine is their suspension and frame improvements. And of course the gearing differences. The YZ was an absolute animal on my first ride with it. We were up in north Georgia woods riding and I did struggle a bit. I have since added a flywheel weight which has made a huge difference in the tight wooded trails. I can see where the 450/500 would be a handful. Was just getting used to it when I had a water skiing "incident" and tore a couple muscles in my upper thigh/groin and sprained my ankle. At least 2 more months before I can ride again.  I'm in my 60s and had been riding pretty hard with some other folks. After having to deal with this injury I'm rethinking the type of riding I will do. Even thinking about selling my bike, definitely don't want to go trough this again. |

You can also put a smaller rear sprocket on the dirt set up and tame it down a bit. Dropping 4 teeth on my KTM 350 XCF-W did wonders for me. I dropped sprocket size in preparation for an Adventure style trip, knowing it would help on the roads. I was surprised at how much smoother it was on the trails. I don’t need to worry about the thing flying out from under me in various situations, which are made worse the more fatigued I get. |

These bikes were FREE. I’ve owned a KTM 690SMC in the past. That single bike was enough KTM for me. |

The 450 is great if I'm doing dirt and lighter off-road, but it's just a heavy beast for technical single track. I just did a 110 mile Turkey Run with it last weekend and there were some spots I had a very difficult time getting through. It was tough watching the guys on 2T 300's just blow up the washouts. |

You learned the tricks although you should get an FMF Gnarly pipe and add another base gasket to your bike. |

My KTM reference was merely to say I’ll never own another KTM. That bike was a nightmare. I’ll look into the pipe. Already went with a flywheel weight, and not opposed to regearing to make it smoother on the trails, considering I only have about $350-400 into the bike. Appreciate the input! |

Got out to an off road park for a full day. First real ride since May. Was my first time riding in real Mx boots, what a difference they make in control of the bike while standing. My Yamaha always felt like a bit of a porker even though it wasn't a heavy bike. No complaints so far. The bike is very well done and parts support is great. Looking forward to putting more time on it next weekend at a proper MX track. |

I'd suggest checking out your local trials club, everyone in trials is super friendly and helpful. I was never interested in organized events, but last year I decided I wanted to become a better rider, so I started attending events and I don't regret it one bit. It was in the mid 70s here yesterday so we couldn't pass up the opportunity to get some practice in.

He sells used bikes from time to time. |

Plastics for old Betas and GasGas bikes are really hard to find, I found more Sherco parts online than the others, I could afford a Montesa so idk about them. Also Sherco USA had a collection of obsolete "vintage" parts they don't offer for sale but you can still get if you call them. I found new fenders online in several places. I'm liking trials enough that I might sell the enduro bike and buy a newer trials bike. I've got a replacement knee and falling while doing enduro stuff with a 38" seat between my 32" legs is not appealing any more. |

I wear glasses, so it makes putting them on super easy. I put the goggle on first, slide my glasses in, then put then lens on. The only think I don't like it the lack of nose protection. Did 150ish miles of forest service roads in PA yesterday. The KTM turned 10 years old this year and 12k miles. It’s been perfect and I don’t have any ambition to replace it any time soon. Attached File |
