All,

Today I replaced the auto hubs on my 97 ranger with milemarker manual hub # 428.

When I turn the selector to the "lock" position it (the selector) doesn't snap or lock to that point. I can turn it freely from the lock position approx 45* back toward the "free" position. When I turn it back to "free" it snaps and stays there. I have never had manual hubs before,  is that normal?

And before someone say I should have bought Warn hubs..... This was a cheap truck to drive during the winter and to haul wood/stone/building supplies, probably won't see 4,000 miles a year.

Normal.  They need to rotate into the lock position.

I understand they rotate to the lock position. What I am trying to say is the selector/turny thing doesn't lock into the lock position.

When I turn it to lock, I can freely move it between lock and free, it doesn't lock into the lock position. When I turn it back to free it kinda snaps in or locks in the free position.

I hope I conveyed that in a understandable manor....alot of free and lock thrown about... lol

If I understand you correctly they are fine

When you unlock them you are unloading the spring inside, So that is why you get the "click" When you lock them you are loading the spring so no "click"

My stock ford lockouts did the same thing.

Stock Warn hubs on my 91 Explorer Sport (same Dana 35 as your 97) do not snap into locked position, same as yours. They snap into free.

Hopefully the MM hubs hold up.. They always had a bad rep on The Ranger Station forums.

Ok so it's normal, cool.

Ya I hope they hold up fine. The truck is stock with stock sized tires. Likely the only time it will be in 4wd is during winter.

Thanks everyone

From the cutaways at the local 4x4 shop, They look like they are more bushings then bearings. So you can imagine that bearings would last longer.

I am sure they would be fine under normal conditions on a stock truck.

I put MM's on a 91 Ranger and ran it for 8 years, no issues. Just make sure those O rings are seated when you put it together as they are pretty small.
