Try Jake Wilson.  Search for discount codes. I have gotten some absolutely smoking deals on tires there.

Unless you already know the brand/model/size you want, your best bet is to go to a brick and mortar store and try on lots of helmets. Wear them around the store for at least 5 minutes each. Should be very snug and not able to move around on your head, but not develop pressure points. You should then buy the helmet at the brick and mortar store, even if it is a bit more expensive than some place online.

RevZilla. Super quick shipping and a great return/exchange policy. Go to a local shop to find what fits your head first, though. Different brands use different shapes. HJC and Speed & Strength fit my head great while Icon feels like a torture device.

you got a round or oval head?

I've got what I call a shoei or oval head, Found that the Nolan helmet fits me perfectly and doesn't cost like the Shoei does

Try and buy at a local shop, or try and buy on the internet (Revzilla).  Pretty douchey to try local and then buy internet.

I used to agree, but it seems local motorcycle shops think they're sitting on gold.  If they're within $20-30 of online typically I buy local.

Generally, they're not even in the same ballpark.

Well when they all go out of business have fun finding the right fit online. There is a value to inventory.

Reading is fundamental.  As previously stated, I don't mind paying slightly more to buy locally.  When the local price is drastically different from the online, I'll buy online.

Your right I jumped the gun. What would you consider slightly more??

Most of the people I get into these arguments with have never had their living depend on sales. We are our own worst enemy

Wow. Sorry I though this was a tech forum and missed that on my phone.

So 10% of a decent helmet huh.(2-300bucks) and even less if we are talking a really nice one.

Pretty hard to come that close to someone with no overhead and possibly no inventory.

Carry on

This.  Different brands come with slightly different shapes to their helmets.  If you buy a round helmet and have an oval head shape you're not going to be comfortable wearing it for long periods of time.

While normally I agree with you and I have had my living depending on sales, here is my story on a helmet I just bought about a month ago. I was looking for the helmet locally and found one in the correct size and color that I wanted. The local price was $169.99 plus 6% sales tax for a total of $180.19. MSRP on this particular helmet is $139.99. I bought the exact same helmet in size and color online new for $59.99 no shipping or tax and I had it in two days. Now I don't mind paying a bit more to support local business but this I just can't justify. They were asking a premium over the already premium MSRP.

That being said, I use the places already mentioned and also Competition Accessories or jcmotors.com.

Try local and ask them to price match.  Unless it is a close out online, there shouldn't be a huge price difference.  Most shops have learned and now price match.  I am willing to factor in shipping into the price (& not include tax), which should make a local shop competitive.  If they can't or won't even come close, then I have no problem shopping online.

With that said, on my last helmet, a Shoei RF1100, I tried it on at the local Cyclegear.  I asked about price matching and they sales guy said they could, but they couldn't match close outs.  The helmet was about $425-450.  I found one online at close out for $315 and bought it.  I don't feel the least bit bad as I buy my tires and fluids from them.  So it isn't like I am trying on gear and not buying anything.

This.  Make sure you wear it around the store for 10-15 minutes, and see if it gets uncomfortable.
