Need some advice from some ARFCOM wrench turners. Finally just paid off my 2006 H3 with 64,000 miles and thinking to switch to a synthetic motor oil that doesn't break the bank.

So is Mobile 1 worth the added cost over a conventional motor oil?

I'm trying to keep this vehicle for as long as possible and want to do what I can to help prevent problems down the road.

Thanks,
Kirch

you're right..

that said, I've been using it in my 2001 since the first oil change.
just turned 150k a week or so ago

We use it in almost everything that has a crankshaft .  well worth the money

A place I worked at in high school and college used it in their salesman's truck.  He had a Chevy 92 1/2 ton with a 305 and it had over 350K miles on it when they sold it.  His next truck was a 93 1/2 ton Chevy with a 350 it had 407k miles on it when they sold it.  Both trucks had mobile1 from the first oil change until they were sold.  Both trucks had the original engines when they sold too, the vehicles weren't drove hard but spent a lot of time on the highway 35-40K miles a year.

That being said my cousin has a 2004 Civic that has 304K miles on it now.  He has used Pennzoil in it since that is what the factory suggested.  Change your oil regularly and don't try to do any Dukes of Hazzard stunts and you should be good.

Do you change your oil as often as the lube tech says?

IMO synthetic oil is typically a waste of money, especially on a non performance vehicle.  I use cheap oil and change it at ~ 8,000 miles. One of my trucks has 273,xxx on the odo.

I switched to Mobil 1 after 30k on my '03 tundra. I also upped my oil change intervals to 7500. Truck is still running great at 320,000 miles. I'm sure though that as long as you change the oil when it needs it, that any good oil will do just fine. I went with Mobil 1 because it's been around forever, I can get it most anywhere and it's the one everyone compares to. Contrary to my initial hopes it made NO difference in fuel mileage.

I change my own oil so the cost difference between name brand synthetic and name brand Dino oil is maybe $15/change. I'm willing to pay that to have more confidence that the oil will protect better.

Rotella makes great oil and its typically cheaper than Mobile1...which is also excellent oil.

I run Rotella dino oil in my Blackbird and T6 (synth) in my Speed Triple.

was just going to suggest that. I personally run valvoline but my cousin runs Rotella in his 96 GMC. When he got that truck it sat for years. oil was sludge so he drained, fulled with rotella, and after 1k miles drained again. on the third oil change, after 3k miles the oil looked great. i wouldnt believe it if i didnt see it for myself.

I've used Mobil 1 for a long time with great results. I've disassembled engines that I ran Mobil 1 in, and they have been super clean inside. I try to buy their blends with the higher zinc content for my older engines. You can see their various products and their zinc and phosphorus levels here: http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Files/Mobil_1_Product_Guide.pdf

Mobil 1 oil filters are excellent as well. Amazon seems to have the best prices on them.

I'm a synthetic guy.

Theres always someone out there that runs conventional and has high miles on a vehicle thus believing synthetic is a waste.

The local performance shop around here that I used to go to uses royal purple only because in the motors they tore up, they said motors run on RP showed a lot less wear and were generally cleaner.

I use royal purple in my car, but it has a couple of turbos on it, so thats why I stick with it.  Mobil 1 I'm sure would be perfect as well, but I started using RP in my mustang a few years back and haven't found a reason to stop using it, so its just personal preference.

I don't think there is any gain from conventional or synthetic but anyway mobil one and rotella are my favorite oil companies.
And both produce a good fine quality product.

What is your oil change interval?

7500 miles and under a synthetic blend is fine, anything more than that and you should stick to full synthetic oil.

If you do your own oil changes it's not a big price increase at all. I never pay more than 25 dollars for 5 quarts at Wal-Mart :P

If you don't..Well then it's a big difference. Only got one done once (First and last time having someone else do it), but it was like ~70 for a synthetic change...~Versus 20 for regular.

I run it in my 350Z, just don't switch a high-miles car from dino to synthetic, you're just begging for leaks.  You're probably safe with your H3.

My bike seems to prefer Castrol RS 4T, it will go about twice as long before the clutch starts to feel grabby and the shifts get harder.

Synthetics are linear chain hydrocarbons that resist oxidation and viscosity breakdown, so that the viscosity stays up longer.  That means they can be used longer before they need to be changed.  The only important variable here is viscosity at temp in the bearing surfaces.  W/o monitoring the oil pressure, one can only guess at when the oil is broken down enough to where it needs changing.  The mfr gives a recommendation for the change interval that's most often overkill.  Changing the oil filter is the most important.  My experience, is that the oil change interval can be ~doubled or more sometimes when the filter is changed, before the viscosity drops.

The synthetics are very useful in air cooled and high performance engines that run hotter, becasue they're more resistant to oxidizing breakdown, so the viscosity stays up and the engine lasts longer.  The regular oils breakdown very fast at those temps and most often, oil cooling is needed.

For regular vehicles on a cost performance basis, the regular oils are fine and the synthetics can cost ~2x times more if it's taken to the same viscosity loss.   W/o an oil pressure guage and an understanding of how to read the changes though, just figure the cost diff by the recommended change intervals.  Wear will be the same.

I left out additives and brands...  just don't use bulk/recycled oil.

I run the extended performance synthetic from Mobil 1.  15,000 mile change intervals.  If the labor to change oil means anything, synthetic is cheaper.  According to the last oil analysis, I could run it a lot longer, but dont

Mobil1 always seemed to drain with the viscosity of water compared to t6 rotella which seemed to hold up better.

I had an XS11 that I always changed the petro oil at 3k. I thought I'd try Mobil 1 in it and up'd  the change to 5k. When I drained the oil I was In shock as to how watery it was. I thought it might have been from the shear loads in the tranny. I filled it back up with QS and sold it with 168k on the clock. The valves never needed adjustment.

What he said.. I use 15w-40 dino in a 83 cummins boat.. Still looks good after 2 years... I also run t6 in my daily driver 2000 concours. With almost 50,000 hard miles everything looks brand new under the valve  cover. Not a bit of scaring on the cams (a typical problem with these bikes)

Personally I think the best benefit for the average engine is starting it in cold weather.

Synthetic flows faster, which i feel is mo' better than conventional oil.

I don't enjoy tearing engines apart, so I don't beat the shit out of my engines, hope for the best,  and go with synthetic.

If you're a Costco patron keep an eye out for the 6 quart cubes when they go on sale. I pick them up for about $27 most times.

This.

There is a lot of information out there on the net about this oil and it's actually a really good oil....at a much lower price than other synthetic oils.  I change the oil in my vehicles around 5000-7500 miles.  Basically, when it hits 5000 miles I start planning to change the oil and sometime within the next month (usually) I change it.  My engines are super clean inside and run well with no burning oil.  Just opened up my wife's Highlander's engine to replace the valve cover gaskets and it was nice and clean inside.

I use Rotella T synthetic 5W40 in my motorcycle (it's a great motorcycle oil), my diesel generator, my diesel tractor, and my lawn mower.

I switched to Mobil 1 since I don't work in a shop anymore and I'm lazy, I don't change my oil as often as I used to.  I do my services now somewhere between 5-10K miles depending on my mood, previously I was pretty religious about doing them every 3K using Motorcraft synthetic blend oils.

Really, use whatever oil you want, use a good filter and change it somewhat regularly, you'll be fine.

We use Mobil 1 in our vehicles. LOVE it. We change our oil around every 6000-7000 miles (obviously checking level in between)

If we wanted to spend a bit more on filters, we could likely go 10k. At that point, the cost is breaking even, if not saving a bit.

We have yet to send samples off for testing, but from what I've seen, that tends to extend the changes even further. On a side note, WHERE do I send a sample for testing?

I get a jug of Mobil 1 at WalMart for $25, so even if I AM spending more money, and draining oil that still has a service life... the peace of mind, and lack of sludge or wear, are worth it to me.

I've been using Mobil 1 in the truck since I bought it at 140k miles. about 188k on it now. It's been up for an oil change for a couple weeks now, as it hit 6 or 7k since the last one. Maybe I'll get to it tomorrow. Not too worried.
