[ARCHIVED THREAD] - My 2000 XJ Build thread (Page 1 of 2)

Hey all! Will be updating this periodically. Just ordered the lift(4.5" RC X-series) and have a list of other stuff I'll be picking up throughout the build.
Specs on Jeep: 2000 Cherokee Sport(black) auto chrysler 8.25 rear 4.0 with 135K on the clock. Completely stock for now, just running 235 duratracs which I am in love with> plan on going up to 31's shortly. The ultimate plan for the build is a "expedition" rig. Jack of all trades, master of none so to speak. Will not be doing any extreme rock crawling or offroading, but mild trails/dd duty. Just has to get me everywhere i could reasonably ask it to. Decided to go with Rough Country due to the price/customer service/list of stuff the kit comes with. A lot of people dog on RC, a lot of people swear by it. I decided for what I will be using the jeep for/how much I want to spend on suspension, this should be a perfect fit. Not to mention RC's warranty is top notch. Plans for the future are front and rear bumpers, rear tire carrier with jerry can, at least a rear locker, Some sort of racking system in the back to organize and tie down gear as well. a 8klb winch, CB and some other misc. items. I will post pics of the jeep as she sits now when I get home, and throughout the build! Should get the lift in Friday, or monday. Either way I have drill this weekend so nothing will get done. |

Eagerly awaiting pics... I've got 2 XJ's - a 96 Sport 4.0, running some Firestone AT's on the stock wheels, and just recently picked up an 89 Laredo 4.0. The 96 is staying stock - since my son is driving it now, and we plan on letting him keep it. I just got the 89 tagged as an "antique vehicle" - it's like 20 bucks for a permanent tag, I will never have to register it again. It's currently also wearing 235/75's (cheap Goodyears) on some old American Racing alloys, but I'm planning on a mild lift, 31's & probably Aussie lockers. I also seek the expedition/safari class utility, rather than a hard core rock crawler or mud buggy. http://i990.photobucket.com/albums/af25/arhoodooman/IMAG1506_1_zps112119a6.jpg Because this is my idea of a road trip...
http://i990.photobucket.com/albums/af25/arhoodooman/IMAG1080_zps93ce8801.jpg Exactly! Gorgeous XJ's man. if I wasn't so damned upside down on the Focus, i'd trade it in on another XJ Just got UPS tracking info it left the warehouse 4 hours after I ordered it![]() .
trying to convince the wife to let me sell the current 235 Duratracs that are practically brand new and get 31" duratracs. Shes not too happy about it, but I think she will come around I'm torn between front bumpers, I really think Im going with the DIY kit from Dirt Bound :Dirtbound bumper I'd just beef it up a little bit. Rear bumper im still torn on. I REALLY like the looks of the swing away tire carriers, but dammit they are expensive |

Awesome rig man! Still calling around to places to find 31's below 1grand. I found them online for $800 but shipping put it to 1100. Ugh. Thanks! Really? I paid around $650 for mine from discount tire direct for just the tires. I had Wally World mount and balance for around $25. |

Said he would take care of me when I mentioned im military. quated me a price of $179/tire(31x10.5r15 duratracs) and said they will give me a trade in for the current ones. Since they are brand new, im hoping AT LEAST $400 if not more. |

I haven't tried them personally - yet, but the reviews on Treadrights look pretty good...

Also, Walmart (at least down here) has a Goodyear Authority AT in 31x10.5/15 for around 155-160 a tire... 148.00 each, with free in-store pickup here... Here they are on an XJ

thanks man! the guys over on NAXJA are freaking me out making me think that the 31's are going to be too small for the 4.5' lift lol I'd go with 32's if you're not afraid of rubbing on occasion. I would rather not rub at all, but eventually im wanting to go with Flat style fenders. I REALLY like the duratracs, but dont want to have to go up to a 16" wheel to accomodate them lol. FOr some reason im being cheap on this, which isn't like me |

Looks good so far. Looking forward to seeing the progress. Here are some of my '99. 3.5" RE (really a 4.5" lift). JCR Offroad (old style) front/rear/sliders, custom built spare tire carrier, Longshot Lighting light bar, Rubricon 16" wheels, Rusty's engine and tranny skids, custom rear skid, JCR tail lights (with Jammy, Inc. Mopar MOAB Rubricon wheel. They ran $225/per new here's the current link from the source mine came from (previous owner installed them, like he did the lift and tires). Mopar MOAB 5x4.5 Quadratec is now selling their own versions of these wheels for about half the price in different color options. I'm not a fan of 5" back spacing but have been thinking about plasti-dipping them black (hate chrome with a passion, and black always looks good) maybe with some red accents. I was gonna replace them with 15's but all the sudden it seems LT265/75-16's and 31x10.5's are the same price now. Quadratec Moab 5x4.5 |

Well guys, discount wants me to come by tomorrow so I can see the wheels they have. They said they would match the 255 price for 5 black steel wheels, awesome. So, rough qoute for 5 33x12.5r15 Goodyear duratracs on steel wheels is 12-1300. Not bad at all This may not be what you want to hear, but any wheel specifically built for a Jeep (Mopar and aftermarket specifically built for Jeeps) will be hub centric where the others will not. Hub centric wheels share the load with the lugs and hub where lug centric wheels just place the load on the lugs (unless hub adapters are used). |

One day. Even set it up for flat tow…long story short, my mother had a 92 when I was a kid. My parents used to flat tow her XJ behind the RV. Dad bought a Dakota and they set that one up for flat tow and kept the tow setup off the XJ. I modified it slightly (and yes that is a t-post).

Well Gents, looks like its going to take a little longer to get the tires. Wife wont let me splurge on them until I have a buyer for my current set as we JUST bought these ones less than 6 months ago. SO, what do you guys think?
Install 4.5" lift this weekend and rock the 235's? or Wait until I can get the new tires to install the lift? |
|
4.5 is enough for 33's with some trimming, and the right backspacing. It's overkill for 31's.
If you are short arming with 4.5" I would definitely get drop brackets. You might wait till your ready for tires and milk the slightly better gas mileage a little bit longer. |

The jeep is getting like 15MPG right now, im thinking I need to swap out the plugs, and o2 sensors maybe. And yeah, It will look pertty gooofy on 235's huh? lol. 30" tire on 4.5" lift. FLEX FOR EVA!!!
ETA: I'm REALLY hoping it doesn't sit as high as everyone is saying. I'm kinda getting freaked out that I went too high lol |

Seem's once everyone does some lift...its never enough. I'm supposed to look at a 98 tonight and all I want is 3.5 The lift will settle a bit as well once is breaks in. Plus once you start adding things (bumper winch armor) itll come down yeah, thats the plan, which bumper up front, swing out tire carrier/bumper in back. |

Well, got everything set up to start, but the fucking floor jack wont jack the jeep up. Too cold, so got it in the house sitting on the floor vent heating up. The wife is NOT happy about this, although shes already pissed that I'm working on the jeep and not paying attention to her, so why not, right .

well, yesterday we got it 95% torn down. All thats left is the control arms, then we have to put on the new brake lines, and put everything back together and start on the back. Supposedly my buddy swears the back will be the easiest part. We shall see |

well gents, shes NOT getting done this weekend Probably should have just waited and planned this out better, but hey. That wouldn't have been fun, right? lol.
|
| So my buddy that came by Saturday for a few hours (hes done three cherokees) is going to come by today when he gets off (2 hours before me) and try to get some progress made. I didn't ask he just told me he'd be there working wheni got home. Awesome guy. Offered to pay him, he keeps saying no. Gotta figure something out for him though. |
|
Hammer the next size down socket on (cheapo sacrificial socket) and try again, can you fit a chisel in there? Try striking it with a chisel in the direction you wanna go. Or maybe try an open end wrench that has flank drive plus type open end.
Though a sawzall might just be easier. |
| We ended up getting everything off without having to cut anything!! Then stayed putting new stuff on and one of the adj. UCAs has jacked up threads so it wont budge. RC is overnighting me a new one tomorrow. Said to run the stock ones in the mean time so we can get it on the tires abs get the Rear and tcase drop done |
