I picked up a new Tundra the other day and want to get a set of aftermarket rims. My intention is to put a more aggressive "winter" tire on the stock steel rims and put the "summers" on the new rims.
I am going to keep the same size and am not interested in a larger rim, low profile tires, etc. Anyway, I am looking for a brand with the reputation for making strong rims suitable for truck applications where the truck gets used like a truck. Looking for something in a matte black/gunmetal color. What do you like and recommend?? |

Random thought... Why not just use B F Goodrich All Terrain Radials all year long??? I have used them on several vehicles since 1989. I have never found a better all round tire... They have three plys in the sidewall and thicker rubber in the sidewall. Most worthless and overrated tire EVER for when the pavement ends All terrain tires are STREET TIRES OP buy you some stock take off alloy tires and wheels for your street treads. It'll save you huge and your truck will look much classier and cleaner for it. IMO aftermarket wheels have reached a saturation point with me to the degree that now they just look like the redneck or ghetto version (style depending) of a riced out Honda from 10yrs ago. BTW you want a set of motherfucking WHEELS not "rims" which would only be part of an unfinished wheel or half of an old school truck wheel. |

Why not just use B F Goodrich All Terrain Radials all year long??? I agree with this /\ Even if you don't go with the BFG AT's (which I ran both on and off road and worked great for me in everything except deep mud) but just about any decent AT tire will do the trick. Maybe I'm missing something but I can't understand why anybody in NC would feel the need for dedicated "winter tires"? You guys hardly get any snow. Certainly not enough to worry about dedicated winter tires.

Look at discount tire direct online. If you order tires and wheels, they mount and balance for free and shipping is free. I searched high and low online and they were by far the best deal I could get on my jeep last month. Tire pricing may be a bit cheaper from some sites, but their shipping charges are crazy.
ETA: If you have a branch near you, they will match their online pricing warehouse. |

Hey Guys, thanks for the responses.
To answer a few questions. It is a 2 WD Tundra with the base 18 inch steel wheels. Living in NC with what I will be doing with the truck, I don't believe I'll need 4WD. I won't be going "4 Wheeling"/ "mudding"/ rock climbing etc. Just muddy rutted up dirt roads..... nothing serious. I have mostly owned 4 WD trucks with one 2 WD prior to this one. Anyway, while not ideal, I got around in the mountains of PA just fine with my prior 2WD as long as I had good "snow"/ all season/ etc. tires on it and about 300 to 500 pounds of weight in the bed. I never got stuck and the truck did OK. I will be traveling to PA in the winter to hunt etc. So, I will be using the truck in the snow and mud on occasion. The truck would look really sharp with a set of nice matte black wheels. I am not looking for anything flashy just a good set of wheels from a manufacturer that has a reputation for suppling tough wheels that do not crack or bend when used in a truck application. I don't want something that bends or cracks if you hit a pot hole or something........ I plan on matching the stock 18 inch factory setup. Not interested in going larger, no low profile tires etc. I figured I would take the stock summer tread Michelin tires off the factory steel wheels and put them on a set of nice matte black wheels..... and put a "mud and snow" tire on the factory steel wheels for those times that I know I'll need the extra traction. With Limited Slip, some weight in the bed, and Mud and Snow tread pattern, I think I'll be fine for my intended use. So, what manufactures make a tough wheel and what do you like?? |
