1998 Nissan PAthifnder. Yes its old but 2 kids in college and to more almost there, keeps me in thsi vehicle. Its super reliable up until today. Well it stil runs like a  champ, just not the AC.

This AM it was fine and blowing ice cold like usual but leter this afternoon it barely got cool. It did get cool, but barely. Well I looked and it looked like it could use a  little charge so I did. I noticed then when the compressor engages it makes a rattlng sound.

I am guessing its amost dead?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance if anone has any input. Oh and FBHO

In order for us to be helpful, you need to get a set of gauges on the a/c system and get a high side and low side reading. This will give us a better picture of what's going on with your a/c.

srry for the delay. Had to get some guages

Engine off                   85 Low 155 High

Engine on AC on          70 Low 200 High

I dont know much but I am thinking the low is too high? Any reccomendations as for what to do next?

I can hear and see the compressor kicking in. The guages also change slightly when it kicks in.

It was 84 out just after a rainstorm. Fairly humid.

Had a buddy recover the refrigerant as he does home AC and had a bottle thingy to put it in.

I vacuumed the lines for 30 minutes then let sit for an hour. No leaks so far.

Refilled and ran a bit. Compressor kicks in and looks like its cycling but pressures are same low and high side.

Looks like a dead compressor?

Replaced compressor. So far so good.
