i bought a 90' ford bronco for my son, i have to admit that when i bought it the only thing i didnt check was the trans fluid. (yeah, i know!)
anywho, everything thing has been fine untill yesterday i towed a trailered car about 40 miles and just close to home the trans started douching fluid from the front of the trans....bad! fluid is clean and didnt leak before. my thoughts are the front seal. had to move it today and added three quarts to get it to go into gear...and it didnt leak out... my question is....because it got hot....and may have been overfull i'm guessing....could it have blown the front seal? now its cold and not flooding out, do you think that this could be cured by replacing the seal? or am i farked? ETA: its a 1990 bronco with 4x4 auto/overdrive |

Sounds like the slipping torque converter clutch overheated the trans and it "leaked" out of the vent. interesting because yes....it was quite hot to say the least...the transfluid that is, not the motor. are you saying that a new torque converter will fix this issue? |
| probably the front seal or a bad convertor its possible the convertor hub could have a crack in it and may not dump fluid out all the time, either way you will have to pull the transmission and convertor out and inspect it closely if it looks ok probably just the seal. mostly labor the seal or a convertor doesn't really cost that much. |

When they start puking from the front seal it's not a good sign.
The Torque converter spins in a bushing pressed into the Front Pump. Once the internal clearances open up from wear, pump pressure will leak past the seal. Changing the seal won't solve the problem the seal isn't designed to hold pressure just minor leakage. If you have it out already bring it to the tranny shop and see what they want to go through it for you. |

I don't think any seals are dead.
I agree with one of the previous posters. you overheated the transmission, and it "boiled" puked fluid out of the vent. if it currently holds fluid to the full mark, and doesn't leak when you shut it down, call yourself lucky and get a bigger cooler on it before you tow again. it may start to slip more or eventualy die because of the abuse, but it probably isn't dead just yet. start saving up now though. |
