Hey all. Was hoping to pick some of the more experienced brains here. I have a 1992 Lexus LS 400 with little over 200K miles. Interior is getting ratty, but the car has been mechanically sound for the almost three years I've had it. Fluids are kept clean and no leaks. About two weeks ago I noticed the performance got BAD. Takes forever to accelerate (like I needed a running start to get up to 25), but once there, maintains speed fine. I noticed the check engine and TRAC lights came on shortly thereafter. She shifts smoothly automatically and manually, just no power. I just looked up how to pull codes from here OBD I port, and will be busting out the jumper wire tonight. Any ideas? |

Got the codes: Engine OBDI Code 25: Air-Fuel Ratio Lean Malfunction TRAC OBDI Code 51: Problem in engine control system I really payed attention and it is shaking the car a little at idle, but smooths out once I get moving. Sounds a little loud on the rear end of the vehicle. |

That motor, is one of the best ever built.
If you have one of the ignition coils go out, the engine will run fine, it will sound fine, but it will be very sluggish performance. With the engine running, disconnect one coil lead, and if nothing happens, reconnect, and check the other. If both are fine, when you disconnect one, you will notice a slight difference. If one is bad, when it gets disconnected, nothing will change, but when the other gets disconnected the engine will shut off. The other thing to look for, is the computers are going out with age. Very common. My transmission is very finicky now, and it will shift from 1st gear, straight to overdrive. It will only go into 3rd gear if I shift it manually. There are a few good lexus sites with info to share. I'm fond of lextreme.com |
