Rolled my truck last night, not sure yet whether itll be totaled or not, only thing that I think will make the dtermining factor is frame damage because there is minor body damage and ZERO mechanical damage. But just in case Ive begun looking for a truck. Whats everyones knowledge/experience with this truck? Ive heard Dodge trannys are shit, but Ive seen plenty of Dodges with 150K+ Thanks. |

One was an '04 the other an '05. OP do you have something else you can drive for a little bit. Don't run out and buy the first one you see. There's thousands of used trucks to pick from. |

The Chrysler trans are ok..if you don't go putting the wrong fluid in them...later model Mopar need atf+4...not dexronIII/Mercon...
Well meaning owners and service shops have killed many..many Chrysler transmissions by 'topping off' fluid levels with the wrong shit!...Also these transmissions cannot take any amount of moisture contamination in the trans-fluid. The rear axels are a bigger problem with these. I own a 2008 Ram 1500 short-wide. Has the 4.7 V8 auto 2 wheel drive... Had 42,000 miles on it when I bought it. After a couple thousand miles..the rear axel started whining...I had purchased a good warrenty...so no big deal...cost me $100 to have the local dealership rebuild my axel and set it up properly. The rest of the truck is pretty decent...I own several trucks of several brands...and they are all about the same pile-O-junk...the Ram 1500 being right up there with the rest on the 'pile of shit meter' |
| If its been in the rust belt its whole life, expect the double walled rear fender wells to start rusting through, if they haven't already been replaced that is. If you buy it, remove the tail lights and spray the cavity up there heavily with Fluid Film each year. |

I have one in that series. Mine has been pretty good overall but here are the more major (expensive) things to watch for:
-Bad ball joints and tie rod ends -Broken HVAC doors -Broken C clips in rear axle (99.9% of the ones that have this have the factory limited slip differential) -Slipping transmission -Rust I could write a short book on the minor stuff that goes wrong on these trucks. The '02+ transmissions are much better than previous generations. If properly maintained, they hold their own quite well. Also, the 4.7 engines last a long time and seldom have major issues. With that being said, cab lights were never a factory option on 1500's. I would be concerned for rust in the roof and a bad wiring job. In addition, I would be wondering what else was messed with and how the truck was driven. This ram has very few extra options so it wouldn't surprise me if it was owned by a younger person that drove it hard. |
