What cars are people racing for $500 or less? O.o

$500 is really the purchase price of the car plus performance modifications.

We have a 1973 Datsun 240Z and we're a bit over budget so we get penalty laps, but we're doing it for fun and we love our car.  This is going to be her last race this weekend and going to build a different car we dont care about.

I bought an E30 and want to do Spec E30, but the PO is trying to talk me into street driving it and doing Chump Car. He said you can buy a seat with a team fairly easily.

Any thoughts?

Nice car BTW.

There are tons of E30's in Chump Car....tons.  And they do quite well.

PO (Previous Owner?) makes no sense.  He wants you turn your car into a chump car, but then says you can buy a seat with another team?

Buying a seat in a good podium type car can range from $500-$700 to cover fees, food, and car wear.

What are your goals with the E30?  You just want to do some HPDE's and regular track time?

That actually looks fun.

My only concern is exactly how they determine a car is worth $500? Given scrap prices today, just about anything brought in will have an actual cash value at the crusher of close to $500, and that isn't running. In the real world $500 cars that run are pretty much a thing of the past, if it runs reliably it is worth a grand.

Other than little point, it looks cool as hell.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. PO says I should just drive my E30 on the streets and not race it.

I would like to road race it in Spec E30. However, I'm a long ways away from that, as I've never even done a track day yet and am still sorting out minor issues on the car (just bought it a few weeks ago).

The PO thinks I should try Chump Car because I might find it more enjoyable and bang for my buck than Spec E30.

ost. We have a desert car race that's similar. Very loosely structured. Basically show up in the desert and do a lap w a beater street car. Its INSANE fun!

Quote Tree alert...

I guess it really depends on what you'd like and how many races per year you'd like to do.  As I said, renting a seat can be $500+ a race.  That can get pretty expensive quick.  If road racing is something you'd like to get into, who says you can't Spec your car?  Doesn't have to be done fast, make it a good project and take your time with it!

This was my plan. Slowly add Spec E30 legal yet street-able upgrades like sway bars, springs, dampers, brake ducts, etc., and then take the plunge on ripping out interior bits and welding a cage in when I get out of school and have more time/money to devote to it.

Edit: I'd be interested in buying a seat in a race, but I don't have any safety gear.

Your safety gear for chump runs about $300-$400.  I don't race our car since I was unemployed for the first race and couldn't afford safety gear either.  We're about to back track and retire her and make her street legal with HPDE's once in a while.
