I have a 97 Honda Nighthawk 750 with about 10k miles on it, and after the engine gets good and warm after riding a while it wants to idle around 3-4k RPMs. When I first start the bike it will idle around 1100 which is perfect. When it's in gear and I'm giving it gas it's fine, but when I pull the clutch in the RPMs rise.

The choke seems crazy sensitive, but it isn't binding. The cable still has a few millimeters of play when off. Throttle and clutch cables are good as well. I also checked for vacuum leaks, but all the rubber on this thing is still in excellent shape.

Could it be as simple as adjusting the idle speed?

I really don't want to pull the carbs

Vacuum leak somewhere. Start checking for rotted hoses and such.

I guess I'll look over it again, and double check the vacuum hose

If you can't find it easily by sight, spray brake cleaner on the hoses. When idle increases momentarily, you found your leak.

If they can be synchronized it may need to be done.

Did another vacuum leak check this morning and it looks like it's where the carb boots connect to the airbox. There's some gunk sealing it and it looks like  someone tore it a bit when messing with the carbs. The engine would jump 2-300RPM when I'd spray em with carb cleaner.

What's a good sealant I can use?

Definately new boots. bikebandit.com is a good place for OEM parts.

Well, I got the bike back today, and she runs great

It's night and day how smooth it runs now. Turns out it was just dirty out of sync carbs combined with bad gas and fouled plugs.

Ah I just synced my carbs for the last hour or so (06 vstar 1100).

Based off your post im guessing you had a shop do it.....If your interested its pretty easy to do yourself with some vacuum gauges or even a homemade set up...Just something too look into to save some time and money!

Yeah, I actually have the gauges to do it, but I figured I'd just have them do it while it was there.

They only charged $160 to do 4 carbs. Worth it to me knowing it's done right.

Good you got it fixed.  A buck sixty is pretty cheap.
