First up is the 3.6 L VVT, aka GM LY7. This is the powerplant on most of the GM suv's, ie. Buick, Caddy, what was Saturn. Application chart here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_High_Feature_engine
Is this a reliable motor? Any known issues? I'm wanting a Saturn VUE, ie. 2004-2007, with the Honda motor/tranny, for a few reasons (Gas mileage, parts commonality, reliability, etc). I'm wondering if I even want to consider and 08/09 with the GM motor/tranny. Second is the 4.8 L Vortec, aka GM LR4. Chevy Tahoe, Silverado, Suburban, etc. Anything to be wary of? Application would be on a 2wd second gen tahoe. Seems like this could be the optimal configuration for gas mileage, assuming no load, ie. cargo or trailer. Just worried it would be underpowered. What has been ya'll's experience? |

The 3.6 has timing chain issues, also water pumps leak quite a bit. Changing your oil every 4-5k and using Delco filters seems to help the timing chain life. You need to pull the engine to do timing chains. The transmission used with this engine has issues with the 3-5-R snap ring coming apart taking out cases.
The 4.8 V8 is the same as the 5.3, have some lifter/camshaft issues, but nothing like the 3.6. |

I thought the timing chain was only due to a faulty mfg process and they were stretching out, long since fixed.
With DI and VVT its a dam fine engine. I generally hate V6s but I do like that one. I am pretty sure there were some problems with the honda set up, but nothing major and I cant look that up. I would go with the GM set up myself and a V8 if possible. |

I've seen the 3.6 leak. A lot. One day when GM figures out how to make a gasket or seal that doesn't leak, then they'll really rule the world.
Same goes on most all gen 3 small blocks. Intake gaskets, oil pan gaskets, rear mains. Good engines, just can't seem to keep fluids in them. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
