I found an engine I would like to buy in Ohio.  I live in SD.  What is the cheapest way to ship the damn thing?

I've always used truck freight.  It's not cheap, but with it being so heavy rules out most shippers.  Maybe somebody on here has done something different that's cheaper.  Hopefully they have and will chime in.

Look in you local yellow pages OR see what LTL companies are around your town.

FEDEX Ground
Saia Motor Freight
ConWay
Yellow /Roadway

these will be your best bet and the least expensive

Make sure the seller drains the fluids and crates it properly.

I shipped an MC engine from NC to South Florida for less than $300 2 years ago.

I would rule out SAIA, Con-Way, and Yellow/Roadway.
Everything we get that has been shipped by them looks like they dropped it from 10,000 feet without a parachute.
USF/Bestway fits that description too.

Yes, but you'd have to check, I've only seen regular type stuff.

Its a Pontiac 455 in Lewisburg, OH.  It only has about 60k on it.  I have an old Trans-Am I drove in my high school days and would like to resurrect it.

1. try http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=70

2. go to www.car-part.com and call some junk yards there and ask their recommendations. i bought a motor a few years back for an acura integra, cost me less then $400 to get from ohio to arkansas

I can't help you with a place but we I was looking, never did buy, a heavy object see if you can ship from work.
Most of the places I asked gave a discount if you you shipped from and to a loading dock. That way they did not need a special truck with a lift gate.

I had a wakeboard tower shipped to me using UShip.com.

Put in specifics about what you're having delivered and people/companies will bid on it, you can pick which bid, if any, you want to accept.

You might get someone who is going that way anyways who will put it in their pickup truck and haul it out for you, especially with all the people going West for hunting season.

There are a lot of companies that will give you a free quote on shipping. As long as the seller is willing to do a bit of work like taking dimensions and helping determine weight you should be good to go.

What year?

I assume it's gonna need a rebuild, they're getting harder to find, I just picked up another long block last week
