I am planning a move from Tallahassee, FL to Chesapeake, VA and want to tow a u-haul 4ftx5ft trailer and I need to install a trailet hitch. I drive a 2000 Plymouth Neon and was wondering would it work if I installed a trailer hitch from Wally world my self would it work for u-haul or should I go the expensive route and let the install the hitch?

You do know the neon has a 1500lb tow rating....

How much is the trailer going to weigh?

www.thehitchstore.com   had one for your car for $223 delivered.
I'm kind of "frugal" and would certainly do my own.
FWIW ... the link above has an installation video you can watch.

Stay safe

I'd have somebody install it. I don't trust unibodies worth a shit, even without hauling something.

I am trying to haul some personal items, the guns clothing and some paperwork along with my sons bicycle. The 4'x8' cargo trailet has a volume up to 142 cu. ft, max load of 1650 lbs, gross vehicle weight 2500 lbs max and empty weight is 850lbs. The 5'x8' trailer volume up to 208 cu ft max load 1800 lbs, gross vehicle weight 2700 lbs max, empty weight 900 lbs per the web site. I am to sure of what weight would be when packed.

You need to call your local u haul store and ask them IF they will rent one to pull behind your car.

They won't let some vehicals tow their trailers.

I'm probably going to put a receiver hitch on my '97 Civic - I need it for my bicycle rack.  I have no concerns about installing the hitch myself or the fact that my car is a unibody - people have been putting hitches on unibody vehicles for years and the world hasn't come to an end.  Just my uneducated BSME opinion

Now, I will say this - you're drive is going to suck serious ass.....................

I just checked the Uhaul site. rated is 1050lbs,

Looks like he can fit 650lbs in the trailer and be with in specs.  That really is a lot less stuff then you might thing OP.

Not that I am one to talk I just went from VA to CO pulling the small trailer with quite a bit over 650lbs of stuff with my Jetta.  Of course it is a diesel so...

The weight adds up really fast.

guns...What about ammo; that's heavy stuff.  A safe??? Cases???

Personal Items...weight sneaks in here too.

Clothing...typically a low density item, but how much are you planning to haul?

Bicycle...less than 50 pounds...don't forget his helmet and the bike pump.

Lone-Wolf, I'm not trying to hate on you, but the tone of your posts in this thread lead me to think that you are not mechanically experienced/trained/inclined.

Please do yourself and your son a blessing, and don't get hurt.

Vehicles with trailers get into trouble just as quickly as other vehicles.  Now here is the catch the trailer adds weight.  The weight reduces handling and increases the time needed to stop.

If you are not sure of the security of the bolt together hitch, then have U-Haul put one on.

If the car will be too heavily loaded the get the truck and put the car on a trailer.

Trust me, the best thing you could do is to rent a truck and a tow dolly, then put your stuff in the truck and pull the car.

Especially if the Neon has an automatic transmission, you might regret towing a trailer with it.
