My 2004 Toyota Camry's AC stopped working correctly yesterday. Blew cold air for about 45 mins and started to get progressively warmer and then became hot. Tried it again today and got about 20 mins before it started again. The window on the AC line has a large bubble in it but I can see there is refrigerant in there. The AC light does not blink and I checked the Mag Clutch relay and it is the newer, correct relay. I had the AC worked on about a week ago and the guy vacuumed out the refrigerant, replaced it and added about a pound. That is the only service/work that I know of having being done to the AC. My Dad thinks it might have a leak but I'm not sure.
Anyway, before I take it to the shop and spend $500 I would love to have some feedback and/or advice on this. I don't think it's a major problem like the compressor or clutch but I also don't want to get charged for unecessary work if it's something simple. Thanks for any input! |
| You stated that you had the AC worked on a week ago. I take it that it had stopped cooling then? Also, why did the guy evac it and the refill it then add a pound. He should have added the exact amount that it called for. Maybe it has too much freon? Kinda confused on that statement. Good idea checking the relay. You might want to check the cooling fan / fans and make sure they are working. I can't remember if they are two speeds on that car or not. But make sure they are doing their jobs. If the fans are not moving enough air across the condensor it will not cool. Also, check the blend door actuator / motor and make sure that it is working ok. If the AC is cooling when you first start the car, then I'd say it has some freon still in it. Whether it is the right amount or not is hard to say without evacuating the system. If the person that worked on it does not have the right equipment, you are throwing away your money. Go to a reputable shop and ask them to diagnose it. Spending a hundred or so to do that could save you several hundred or up to a grand. I did say "could". Good luck and I'll try to remember to keep an ear out for the outcome. |
