you don't do a lifestyle poly for the national guard or even a single scope background invesigation (unless you are going MI or something), you will only be subject to a  national agency check and credit/etc for enlistment.  It's not too in depth

Everything will be totally transparent to you other than doing the paperwork

They may do a background check before you deploy though... thats what they did for us.

ETA I never did a polygraph though (should have read it more throughly)

Polygraph for security clearance?! Your buddy is either MI, PsyOps, or a liar. When you sign your enlistment contract, your MOS should entail whether or not you need a security clearance. When I enlisted as a 13B, I had to fill out this absurdly long packet for a securtiy clearance, and a few other DA/DD forms, but never a Polygraph test. When I was deployed, I had to fill the same stuff out again <imagine that>, but still no polygraph.

my buddy said when he joined the army in artillery he had to pass a polygraph also his friend who is a local police officer had to take a polygraph and that they had to call just about everybody he ever knew to get references

He is full of shit. I am career Artillery and a former recruiter. No one takes a polygraph test before enlisting. MI types take one at some point but not prior to enlisiting.

Maybe his recruiter told him to get one done because he thought he was full of shit.

I hold a TS and have never had to take a polly.

yeah no poly here and i had a fairly high clearance for the military. I did have an interview with an OSI agent though. i know if you try to become a cop you might have to take one though. but thats a different story.

Unless you are going MI or something you will only be getting a Secret clearance at best, which is little more than a criminal records check.

The guys I know with DoD Top Secret-SCI clearances didn't all have to take a poly, and for some who did it was elective (it looks good if you have one).

Almost nobody gets a poly without getting into a bad position after their clearance is issued.

Your bud is full of shit.

I've had a TS in the ARMY (DoD) and now I have a secret through the (DoS) and during either of those did I once ever have to take a polygraph for any secrtity clearance.

I've done plenty of face to face interviews though.

PSYOP requires just a secret.  only certain MI programs/jobs require the CI poly

Even as an MP, I didn't have to take a polygraph.

Me too. Hear it's different for the MI guys that dabble in SIGINT and other things that blur the line between the army and civilian intelligence.

You're buddy's full of shit.  I'm former MI officer w/ current TS/SCI and I've had a poly.  Only necessary (in the Army) for SAPs.  If you don't know what that is you don't need a poly.
