What's a good gift idea for a friend being deployed to Kuwait for 1 yr.? A group of us really want to give something nice, since he's going for a year and has a 5 month old and 2 yr. old. Would a SAT phone do any good, or is there cell service available? What cell service is available, if any? Perhaps a big juicy lotsa minutes international calling plan? Or just an IPod? This guy is a great guy, and there's group of us who aren't rich, but would each throw in a hundred if the gift is right, and would be useful. Also, if you're being deployed to Kuwait, what are the odds of then getting sent to Iraq or Af-stan? Thanks in advance. |
+1 or a PSP Sitting in Kuwait for 2 days with nothing to do while going on leave completely sucks. You can only chill at the MWR for so long. |

The PX's have a lot of the basics food, snacks, etc....guys used to collect dvd's and loan/trade them to keep everyone entertained...go to a pawn shop and get them cheap. I believe Nextel used to have coverage, but it was "suspended" when I was looking in '02. I believe T-mobile had coverage at about 1$ per minute. You could have some civilians get "local economy" cell phones and buy minutes to call the states....I think that was the best deal going. |

I agree. PSP or an IPOD. He can get a Haji phone while there to call home with (rather, they will be calling him, it is cheaper that way). he will get calling cards from the local phone shop on base. I love my IPOD. It got me through my 10 months there. It enabled me to sleep in the hootch where 60 or so guys were snoring away. :) |
There are AC and AA adapters... |
| Get him an iPod; I know for a fact the flights from the states to the AO is worst than pulling teeth, specially if you are flying aboard a C-17 with no enterntainment. I went in with a Game Boy and a CD player with tons of CD-Rs and made the trip less of a PITA. |

Kuwait is probably a pretty damn nice place to be sent. Especially if they he can get permission to go offpost. I had to spend some time at the Kuwait City airport. Lots of Servicemembers there in civillian clothes (shorts and t-shirts) shopping (it's a freaking mall there). Probably just the permanent party though, and not the deployed. Plus at the larger bases the PX is very well equipped. T-Mobile and Cingular can roam on the local networks but it's expensive. Almost $4 a minute IIRC. I'd agree with the PSP and a few games and/or movies. Maybe a large memory stick to use it as an MP3 player, or to transfer movies onto. |

No to the SAT phone, phone cards are good, but only AT&T. He will probably have access to DSN line, so he can call for free, but limited on time and number of times a week he can call. Any idea where in Kuwait? I was in Iraq for a year but spent the last two weeks pushing gear and people out of KNB, Arifjan, and Camp Virginia. |
LMFAO. I think just in my team's room we had somewheres around 200-300gigs of porn! Everyone had it all the way up our chain of command. On my 1st deployment our top had the most porn out of anyone... * I was in Kuwait for 8 months or so, and besides a laptop an Ipod would be very useful. But by far the best would be a Halibeutoron (sp?! ) weather machine so he can cancel the daily sand storms! |
