My 0653 Reserve Marine son just found out that he will deploy to Iraq sometime in the next couple of months. At his reserve unit he has been doing mostly 0651 and some 0656 stuff and not much if any 0653 DMS. What can he expect when he gets to the sandbox? Where is he likley to be stationed? What will he do? Will he be running any convoy security or doing any other work outside the wire or maybe peremeter security. (Little sucker's trying to swipe my ACOG which he is welcome to of course if he needs it) Any info on what his tour is likely to be like would be most appreciated Semper Fi Rocketman |

I would say it depends who he works for, and how well that OIC/SNOIC holds on to his Marines. My guys had to do an 8 hour shift, 8 hours of perimeter, and then had 8 hours to themselves. That sounds pretty shitty, but our comm was good, so it was possible to get some shut eye on the "work" shift. That was on the 2005 deployment. We didn't make it past Kuwait this time. I doubt he'll do convoy security, but not knowing what unit he is with, where they are going, and what their manpower is....I'm just making an educated guess. ETA: Is he out of Greensboro? |

Thanks Kota4bye, a little more info would be great for his mom and I. Marine son has the usual "whatever it takes" attitude and when given an order will render a snappy hand salute and an aye aye sir and then get the job done. He's not asking for more info at this point (and would KILL me if he knew I was) but I'd just like to hear a little more about what 0651,0653 Marines are doing in the sandbox and maybe where they might end up while in country. He said all he was told at this point is that he's going and that he's going to work within in his MOS. I'm also curious if the data guys might find themselves firing shots in anger at some point now and then. I was an 0351 during my USMC service so I KNOW what I would have been doing in Iraq but as close as I got to Comm when I was in was humping PRC25 batteries. I want to observe OPSEC of course but thanks for what ever you can learn. |
