Does anyone have any info on mobilizing with a unit as an augmentee?  I have heard of people doing it but dont exactly have the straight scoop on how to do it.  I am interested in doing an Afghanistan tour with a light inf unit when I get back from Iraq.  Current MOS is 11B.  I am looking to be in a line unit squad and not some higher level Afghanistan equivalent of MNF-I.  If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it
Thanks

Sorry to be off topic but your sig line reminds me of my college A/P class's wall.  It said "Tell me, I forget, Show me, I remember, Involve me, I understand."

Good luck to you!  And thank you for your service.

There is a form on the @X citizen website you can fill out to volunteers, BUT that is not unit specific. My advice is to shop around looking for a unit going, the personally contact thme and volunteer your services. We had a few guys do that with us, even sent 2 to 21B school so they could go.

Hoppie,

Hope you're doing well over there. Garand_Shooter is corect in that once you volunteer to be mobilized/extended, its at the Army's discretion where and who you're going with.

If, on the other hand, you contact the CO of the unit you want to go to Astan with and apprise him of your situation, he can request that you be specifically attached to his unit. That's how a friend of mine did it. My only advice is to contact the CO of the unit to get the ball rolling before you extend/volunteer. Otherwise, if you extend, you're nothing more than a 'free agent' that can be assigned/picked up by any unit in need of your MOS.....

If you are interested in going as a 21B (12B) I can get you information on who will be replacing us when we rotate out....of course that is a year away.

Hoplite,

11B and currently in the Reserves? I suspect you may be in one of the training divisions that are currently training Iraqi troops........yes/no? Since the Reserves no longer has traditional Infantry units anymore, 11B's are usually only found in the training divisions that have the mission of either BCT/AIT or who run the Lanes Training at the mobilization stations to get deploying units up to speed. So, finding a position in a line unit would be a stretch in today's Reserve. Finding such a position in a NG unit would be more feasible. Or, you could consider going to/back AC.

But be forewarned that it is not uncommon for your records to get hosed up when transferring between the AC, Guard or Reserve, actually it is sometimes the norm and not the exception. In all probability you will also loose any promotion points you had locally on your next units OML if your records do in fact get hosed up or temporarily lost in transition. If not, your still an unproven commodity in the eyes of your new chain of command compared with "their" soldiers and are subject to local politics. And, you could actually loose a stripe in the process, especially if going AC. All valid points to consider before you make the move.

If your in one of the Training Divisions and are currently deployed, you could transfer into another one, but you'd be back where you are doing the same missions. Best bet in the Reserves is to get into an Engineer unit as most of them I know are not doing much engineer work and have more or less been made into defacto Infantry units.

You are incorrect.  I am on a team with 11Bs and 2 medics.  I dont do any secret squirrel stuff but i do not want my business out in the open.

I did the guard to reserve thing a while back.  it was not a user friendly process but I am not looked down upon here because I came from a different unit.

TRaining unit aint my thing.  I always viewed them as places to hide from OCONUS mobilization.  I probably will just have to go back to guard when i redeploy home.  The more I find out from sources here in theater and what I read here, I realize that is the course of action to take.

No problem, I believe I know what type of unit your with. These are the exceptions, what I was referring to are the norm for an 11B in the Reserves today. So, you may consider staying where your at and waiting for your units next rotation which in these days probably won't be very long, and hope for a change in theater. Or, Go back to the Guard and hope for the same.

Good to hear your treated equally. Being an outsider usually doesn't last long in any unit I've seen but is usually dependant upon you proving your worth so they see you as an asset as soon as possible. What I was really trying to get at was on the administrative end of things. If your records do get fouled up in the transition process, it will only delay a possible promotion you may otherwise be due, or cause you to be dis-enrolled by your old unit from a MOS/NCOES school you require and the resulting amount of time it will take for your new unit to get you enrolled in the same can further delay career opportunities/promotions.

While I wouldn't exactly say Hide........ yes, traditionally training units have a CONUS mission. But, that is changing somewhat as there is currently one training Division in one theater training the locals, and in all probability will be replaced by another when they rotate out. I personnally would have a serious moral delimma with the idea of training Hajii's who "may" turn on us at some point in the future,.......... the idea does not appeal to me.
