I've been stationed there three different times over the last 18+ years, but I was last there in 2006.

Fayetteville and Fort Bragg have changed a bit, so I will only go with what I know.

Don't look for a house near Murchison Rd or Boonnie Doone.  Spring Lake(the part close by base) is about as bad.  Most of the people I know are buying places in Hope Mills, Gray's Creek, Sanford, etc.  All are at least 30 minutes away from post as there is no way to get anywhere fast during peak traffic times there.

Gun laws are OK, but buying new handguns can be a bitch to start off with.  Unless the purchase permit versus CHL requirement has changed(someone else can answer that).

Guns Plus in Spring Lake and Jims down Yadkin have indoor ranges, McKellars has the range on post.

It is called "Fayettenam" for a reason.  Several of my buddies had their houses or apartments broken into while they were at work.  One guy had someone kick open his front door while his wife (fresh from Thailand) was home alone.  I had my Jeep broken into twice ON-POST.

The only decent places to live are a good driving distance away.   Traffic sucks in the morning, and it can take up to 30 minutes to get through the gate.

On-post housing looked pretty nice, but I think there is a waiting list for it.  I would try to live there.  If you decide to live off-post I would look in the areas out by the drop zones.  I forgot the name, but it lets you use the less crowded gates in the morning.

Yadkin road has all of the soldier stuff shops.  Stay away from the Murc.

Womac is a nice medical center but parking is always scarce.  It is fairly new and modern.  I was fortunate enough to not spend a lot of time there, but from what I witnessed it is a top notch facility.  It also sits very close to the housing areas and is away from the (old)barracks and motor pool areas.  The old hospital was converted to offices.

ETA:  Check out the Airborne/Spec Ops Museum in downtown Fayetteville if you get a change.  Neat place.

About guns:

I do not know if your NFA stuff will be good to go on post.  All firearms entering the base must be registered.  You can keep them in on-post housing as long as they are registered.  You can't conceal, ever.  You are only supposed to drive around with guns if you are going to the range, hunting, or leaving post.

All of the single guys kept their guns with a friend that lived off-post.  I don't know of anyone ever going through the trouble of locking them up in the armory.  It was highly discouraged.

Don't leave any weapons in your vehicle.  They will get stolen, and you will get a ticket if you report them stolen.  There are punks that do nothing but drive around base and break into cars.

I live out towards Cameron, a few miles north of Vass Road (NC-690). If you're willing to drive on some dirt roads, you can get on and off post fairly quick even during peak traffic times.

I think I'll live on post at first and bring/register my ccw pistol.  What is there to do in the surrounding areas?

over by the specops museum there are a lot of nice places to eat and a cool rock gym. called the climbing place. there is a lot of stuff to do at bragg. at the gyms theres usually some MACP going on and there used to be a horse stable you could go riding over by the MI units. check out paddy and bills its a live music irish bar by chris's steak house. lots of good times there! cadilac ranch is.......eh. if you can dance you can pick up some cute white trash chicks.the mash house is good micro brewery, good stuff. there are two waffle houses on opposite street corners. the one closest to walmart is the better one.

i lived at kings cross apartements for a year and really liked it, its on ivanhoe court. not a bad spot and its right next to post. lots of places going up there. all the gun shops are stupid over priced, especially Jims. theres another pawn shot/tactical shop right off bragg blvd next to all the "massage parlors" thats really a great place to shop. anything on the black list is fun but bad juju. lots a korean ladies giving happy endings.

if your looking for a car or something to drive you can get a good deal at the lemon lot at the north post. i think its north post PX. smoke bomb hill shopette is 24hours and fun fact! sells more alcohol than any other store in the country!

check out the BOSS program for stuff to do and if your looking for a relationship of any meaning, dont date anyone within 20 minutes of base. grey group has a cool shop there and so do a few other places. general jacksons is overpriced but sometimes is the only place that will have what youre looking for

I lived there as well from Mid 04 to Mid 06 with an Iraq tour in the middle.  They were built in the early 90s during my first tour there.  Decent apartments, close enough to post to shower at home after PT, somewhat pricy, but I was pretty happy.  VERY flexible around me coming in, closing out a place, going to Iraq, getting a new place, and then PCSing to JRTC 5 months later.  If I recall correctly, it is all managed by a company which has several apartments in the area.  There are plenty of other apartment or rental house options around there.

it was a nice place, and theyve built a ton of the same type in that little area. theres a gander mountain like an 1/8th of a mile away. i lived there with about 10 other guys from my unit and we all made nice with the ladies at the front office. it was a good time! we had so many girls in and out of that place the front gate guard just let any unaccompanied female in i loved being a specialist!
