I am an engineering student who is looking to upgrade my MacBook in order to run ProE.  I'm not really computer savy and am looking for advice.

As noted, I have a MacBook

Hardware:
-Intel Core 2 Duo
-Processor Speed: 2GHz
-L2 Cache: 4MB
-Memory:2GB
-Bus Speed: 667MHz

Serial-ATA: Capacity=145GB

I'm wondering if it is even possible to upgrade enough to comfortably run a 3D drafting program.  I do realize that I will probably have to run parrellel operating systems and I have already planned on getting Windows to run other programs.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Parallels works pretty well. I have used it to play Never Winter Nights on my 2GHz mini so on a current MacBook Pro it should have even better performance.

If it doesn't you can always dual boot into Windows if you need to (but I'd try Parallels first).

More RAM - especially if you're planning on running Parallels/Boot Camp. Other than changing the hard drive to a SSD for a bit of extra speed, I would think that's pretty much all the upgrading you can do...

The video card that is in it is a Intel GMA 950.  Also I talked to the people at the Apple store and they said that I could add more RAM and that would help.

Thanks again for the suggestions

that Intel 950 graphics chipset is gonna make your performance suffer.  It'll probably WORK, just not very well or quickly.

FUCK!!!  Thanks for letting me know before I dropped coin on the RAM.  I'm assuming that a new video card is a no go??

Thanks a million for all of you expertise.

I've used ProE and Solidworks on an almost identical Macbook, except with 4GB ram and a 250GB hd. No problems. I didn't do much FEA or any extremely complex models, but integrated graphics didn't hurt performance too badly. The vast majority of 3D cad work isn't nearly as demanding on hardware as your average FPS video game. And I wouldn't want to do a extremely complicated project in ProE anyway.
