You know the kind of display you get in Explorer, where you can see file hierarchy and you can expand/close folders at will.

I'm looking for a stand alone app that will do the same, hopefully freeware/opensource (windows preferred but Linux is ok)

I've  seen a couple java widgets that do the trick, but they're webserver plugins.

I've got most of this put into a visio project, but it's gotten so friggin huge now, we'd like to be able to expand/collapse folders.

this is for a visual/gui for a database/assest mgmt reporting system we're building (we'd like to be able to see the structure of things and arrange them to our liking and then present them to the programmer)

ETA: To hopefully clarify what I'm looking for.. not looking for a file manager.. I'm looking for something that LOOKS like one, but is stand alone. We want to design/map out a database before we create it.  a graphical representation of this map with collapsible/expandable folders would be preferred.

I used to use an AMAZING tree utility called XTree Gold. It stopped working at one point due to windows "improvements". Iwas TRULY an amazing thing, worked GREAT in DOS

thanks for the suggestion.. not really what I was looking for, although it does do some of the things I mentioned.  I clarified my OP (hopefully).

this is basically what 'replaced' the software you mentioned:
