| My desktop HD has been making funny noises lately, so I decided it is time to upgrade. If I get a new HD, I assume I need to get the Full Version of Windows 7. Correct? I also have a laptop that I would like to upgrade that is on XP. If I want to reformat that HD and do a fresh install, can I get by with a simple upgrade version for the laptop? |

If the version of windows you have qualifies for the upgrade, you can get the upgrade version for both. Even wiping the drive out, you can install the upgrade... you might be prompted to insert the original OS disk and/or product keys (haven't done this with 7, but have with older OS) before it will let you proceed, but it should work. |

My desktop is an HP, that never came with any startup disks, and the laptop has ubuntu running on it. Hmm... if you want to erase and reinstall, I don't know how that would work with the win7 upgrade. Depending on whether it wants you to just enter the product key (what I imagine it will want) for you old version of windows or whether it wants a disk. Worst case scenario, you could upgrade/clone the old hard drive. I have honestly never tried to run a windows upgrade on a factory installed copy of windows... might want to search out the FAQ's or call microsoft. I'm positive that (provided the desktop is something you can officially upgrade from) you are ALLOWED to do it, but not sure what the proper steps would be. The laptop would be a no-go, unless you have another copy of windows that isn't in use, which also meets the upgrade requirements. ::edit:: I see that you said in your first post that it was XP (I assume you just changed from XP to Linux), so you should be able to buy the upgrade version for that, as well. Once again, I assume just entering the product key would be sufficient, but don't quote me on that. |
