I have a Western Digital passport and passport elite. Both have been kept in a drawer for the past 6 months. I am trying to use them now and I am running into all kinds of issues.
1. On plugin the indicator on the drive lights up. On the passport it is solid... the elite is blinking as if reading data. 2. The Elite is recognized by the computer and gives the option to format... passport gives me the error "usb device not recognized" and will not show up in my computer and only shows up in device manager as "unknown usb device" 3. Autoplay launches for the Elite but will not proceed past that screen (i.e. no choice to "play media files" "open file to view items" etc.) 4. Extended test on the Elite using Data Life Gaurd results in "too many bad sectors detected" I have tried to open them on different computers with different cables and have even tried using my xbox 360 (which is what I normally use the Elite with for movie viewing) I have searched the internet for similar issues and have been unable to find anything... so what say you ARFCOM techies... I have to recover data from the regular passport as it is irreplaceable and the backup was the ELITE... what to do??? |

I can't figure out what the heck you are saying each one of the does.
Second, what operating system. |

The blinking light one is could be an error message. Dots and Dashes like Morse code sorta. Look for a pattern.
A lot of those drives can be opened up, and the drive removed or replaced. Maybe pop the drive in a computer and see if it works there. Chances are though, some time in that six months they got damaged (i.e. someone pulled the drawer out and dropped both or something). That stuff is cheap enough, it's probably better to just get a newer, faster, higher capacity one than to fart around with what you have. |

Yea I live by myself and don't have anyone over without me in the room (one bedroom NY apartment... ) no one has touched it so damage I dont consider to be likely. The capacity is 320 and 500 gb... so they arent that low capacity... I like these due to the fact you dont need to hook them up to a power source... The biggest thing is I MUST have the data off of the 320 one... So I may end up paying someone to fix it... Hope it does not get too pricey. |

I suppose you could call their help lines but my guess is that you would be better off hitting your forehead with a ball peen hammer.
I find it VERY odd that both of these drive are deactivated at the same time in a similar manner. Were they exposed to a strong magnetic field? Like stored near a large TV or stereo speakers or something. Can you hear the drives spooling up? Heck if they don't work anyway maybe some gingerly taping could free up the platen if it is stuck. I think you may be correct, you me screwed. This is why I try to have data stored in multiple places and the irreplaceable stuff burnt to DVD/CD disks. |
