Well today is the day.  I know a lot of you were able to get the RTM before today, but still.....let's hear all of those first impressions from those who have bought Windows 7.

I'm really hoping that the compatibility issues are gone.  I have been sticking to windows XP...until today.  As soon as I have a chance I will be upgrading to 7...I hope I don't regret it.

Wasn't so much the GUI as the bloated pig functionality and bugs.

I was running XP until my upgrade to 7 about two months ago and I am quite happy.

If you liked Vista, you'll LOVE windows 7.

If you didn't like Vista, please try Windows 7.  You may be pleasantly surprised.

Try to keep an open mind.

I did the pre order thing from the micro soft store and still waiting for e-mail to down load it.

My bank card shows a hold for the correct amount but not billed yet.

Anyone receive the down load e-mail yet today?

Got the RTM 64 bit Ultimate - my system setup

Memory - Kingston Hyper X 887 - 4gbs
GPU - EVGA 260 GTX
PSU - PC Power and Cooling 750 Silencer

Did an in place upgrade over Vista Home Premium x64 bit edition.  The upgrade took exactly 3hrs and I didn't have that much on my machine since it's just for gaming, photo and video editing.  Installing updates now.  So far everything "seems" to be ok.  Will do some more testing to be sure.  Specs of my machine:

Intel i7 2.66GHz proc OC'd to 3GHz

12GB of 1333 memory.

2 - 500GB 7200rpm hard drives

2 - 1TB 7200 rpm hard drives

EVGA nVidia 260 Super Clocked Edition video card

Ehh...  for everyone else reading this thread, I highly recommend doing a clean install instead of an upgrade.

Takes about 20 minutes.  And you start with a clean system.

eh,

I have done it multiple times now, both clean and upgrade, and to be honest I don't really see a difference between the two in performance.

But a clean install is always prefered if possible.

Yep.  Only drivers you should worry about are any specialized ones, like your video card.

And any that show a yellow question mark in device manager.

Well the reason I'm not doing to do a fresh install was that I had too many programs on there that were by smaller companies and it is a PITA to get them reactivated.  So the upgrade route made the most sense.

Why the hate for a torrent?

Now if he downloaded a keygen or a hack then yeah, he's a pirate.

Downloading the installation files via torrent isn't a big deal and probably faster.

Edit: I'm wondering if the Microsoft downloader is a torrent client.

No hate for Bit Torrent at all. The pirate talk is what will get this site marked and threads locked.

MS Does use the Bit Torrent tech to deliver DL's, at least they were for a while.

I am a septic. I am currently using the 32-bit 90-day free version, which should be expected to have less features than the full versions.  I have it running on a Dell Optiplex 760 that came with XP Pro and Vista.  I removed the drive and placed a new SATA drive in.  I followed the instructions for formatting the drive (easy) and did a clean install.  The first couple of days it was a little slower. I had trouble with applications opening.  Now, it seems to have sped up!  I only have a single gig of RAM in the machine and it is running well.  During the last week, I had to log remotely into several PCs at the same time and do maintenance.  It was just as quick to log into them from this machine as it was the original XP build and as fast as my IBM laptop.   I have been impressed with it.  Especially following Vista.  I realize that it is based off of the Vista design, but I really think it is quicker and better.  I really like XP and still use it, but I feel more comfortable upgrading to & than Vista.  Besides, if you don't more forward, you aren't moving.

That was likely Superfetch it takes Superfetch a couple days to learn your habits and it is now caching programs you use frequently so they open faster. Get another GB of ram and it will do even better..

Running pro 64 bit.

No major application problems so far, but a lot of nit pick issues that are adding up.

I still hate the start menu, I don't like the new windows explorer, file associations for media players are an issue as i can't get them set correctly.

Too many damn services turn on after I turn them off.  MS must think I want that functionality, because even though I am on a LAN with no other computers and I turned the server service off, apparently I must really want it on.

Can't get rid of the hybernate file, but the swap file is gone (i run without a page file)

Clear type is on intermittently, though I turned it off.....
I like the reworked control panel, the new device manager.

I have been running windows 7 professional for about a month or so and I absolutely love it. It boots up fast, it's appealing to the eyes and I have yet to break it yet. It seems as though windows 7 is definitely more stable as I haven't really had any issues with it yet even though I am sure I may encounter minor problems along the way.

I have done two installs. I did a fresh install on my laptop. It’s more critical to my computer needs and don’t want to mess it up. It was a smooth install and it’s running great. I installed 7 Ultimate X86 on the laptop. Then I did an in place upgrade on my desktop. It’s been running Vista Ultimate X86 same install with a few restores for about 2.5 years with no major software issues. I wanted to do the in place just for the experienced. Well I ran the upgrade advisor and it came back ok with the exception of my Acronis software. I took care of the issues listed and was off. The instillation of 7 was fine except for my antivirus software. It messes the whole thing up. So I did a fresh install of Ultimate x64 and love it. This thing is running great. I am having no issues except one of my games but it’s an EA issue not a Windows.
