are you trying to install in safe mode?

Bootable anti-virus CD.

http://www.techmixer.com/bitdefender-rescue-cd-with-auto-update-virus-definition-features/

That will get rid of most of the really evil stuff.

Once that's run its course and you are 'clean', a boot into safe mode should be all you need to do in order to start removing stuff with malwarebytes, spybot search & destroy, or the malware removal utilities of your choice.

Sometimes if you rename the program file it will let you run it.

If the rename of mbam.exe to something else doesn't get it running try Combo Fix http://www.combofix.org/. I have used it with success on some heavy infected computers.

SuperAntiSpyware.

It usually takes care of everything. Occasionally I back it up with Malwarebytes, but it's usually not necessary.

I've tried renaming it but I'm not sure if I did it right.

rename the mbam.exe to something else from safe mode.

Then launch the exe from there.

I would try the bootable anti-virus cd if that doesn't work.

rename it to something like mb2.exe

if it still won't run, try combofix as suggested above, afterwards run malwarebytes.

If that doesn't work, nuke it from orbit.

Just for future reference:

It should be under Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti Malware by default.
